If you like your Cheesecake Factory, you can keep your Cheesecake Factory

Former President Barack Obama has been on the campaign trail trying to rally multiple Democrats to political victory in the midterm elections on Nov. 3. On Wednesday, he campaigned in Georgia. Earlier this month, he was in Michigan campaigning for Democratic Senate candidate Abdulrahman Mohamed el Sayed. At both stops, Obama did what Obama does best: lie and sow the seeds of discord, division, and discontent.

While in Ohio last week, Obama mocked President Donald Trump for his renovations and decor choices at the White House. He quipped that Trump should be working for HGTV instead of serving as president. He also lambasted Trump for his use of the color gold in his decorating.

“What’s with the gold?” said Obama. “He’s got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory.”

Political jabs and attempts at humorous criticism are nothing new on the campaign trail. Moreover, it is unlikely that many people will have much sympathy for Trump over Obama’s insults, given the current president’s penchant for offering his own criticisms. All’s fair in love and on political campaign trails. And while the comments about the Cheesecake Factory received the most attention, what warrants the most criticism are the comments Obama made a few days later, when, during another campaign stop, the 44th president lamented that the country was so politically divided.

“I don’t know about you but I’m tired of being angry, and I’m tired of being divided,” said Obama.

“And I don’t know about you, but I am tired of being angry,” said Obama. “And I’m tired of being divided. I want friendship, and neighborliness, and joy and generosity. I want everybody rolling up their sleeves in the common enterprise of rebuilding America. I want everybody handing our country and our world off to our kids a little better than they are right now. That’s what I want.”

There’s a lot to unpack here, but it is vintage Obama. First, it kind of sounds as if Obama wants to … make America great again. Second, his performative passion about political division — division to which he was a significant contributor — is indicative of his duplicitous nature. He is very talented at pulling the wool over Americans’ eyes while calling for liberal, Democratic, left-wing political revolution. He gift-wraps it nicely with the ribbons and bows of “hope and change” and a less divisive future.

It reminded me of the snake oil salesman’s tactics he used when promoting the Affordable Care Act. When addressing the legislation and public concerns, he promised Americans that “if they liked their doctor, they could keep their doctor.” Yet none of that was ever true. Now, once again, he puts on a brave face and turns on his politically seductive charm, bemoaning inflammatory and divisive political rhetoric while stoking the flames of discontent by divisively criticizing Trump’s White House and comparing it to a deceased theocratic authoritarian’s former palace and a beloved American chain restaurant. This iteration of Obama’s chicanery should be labeled “if you like your Cheesecake Factory, you can keep your Cheesecake Factory.”

Obama’s pleas to stop the division and political fighting are like Joseph Stalin calling the Soviet Union a democratic republic. Both are untrue and the opposite of what is truly desired. Let’s not forget that Obama is the same person who famously once told his supporters to confront political opponents on the street to “argue with them, and get in their face.”

Obama is a contemporary leftist — perhaps the ultimate contemporary leftist — in American politics. He wants division and discord, as long as those who support his ideologies, ideals, and preferences are the ones doing the yelling and criticizing. He believes in anger and dissension just as long as it is the liberals, Democrats, socialists, and communists who hold the upper hand and political advantage. The calls for civility and peace are nothing more than the usual left-wing doublespeak.

They don’t want coexistence or any of the other platitudes Obama called for. They just want conservatives, Republicans, and others on the Right to be silent, submissive, and compliant.
