Elon Musk had an unexpected response to Republicans’ crushing midterm election losses Wednesday morning, cracking jokes about space lasers after pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into GOP campaigns that ultimately fell short.
The Tesla and SpaceX billionaire spent an estimated $474 million supporting Republican candidates and conservative causes during the 2026 election cycle, making him the largest individual political donor in modern American history.
Rather than launching into an angry tirade over the results, Musk appeared to take the losses in stride, posting a sarcastic message on X shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday.
“Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn’t work this time”
The billionaire accompanied the remark with a shrug emoji, poking fun at conspiracy theories that previously accused him of manipulating American elections through his satellite technology.
The joke referenced debunked allegations that Musk’s Starlink satellite network had somehow interfered with vote totals during President Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential victory.

There is no credible evidence supporting those allegations.
Musk followed up with another message that appeared to address the potential consequences of Democratic victories for his business interests.
“Data centers in space looking pretty appealing right now.”
The comment came after Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Gov. Greg Abbott in Texas, delivering a stunning political reversal in a state that has become central to Musk’s business empire.
Hinojosa has called for an immediate moratorium on new data center development, a proposal that could create obstacles for companies investing heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Musk has relocated major operations for Tesla, SpaceX and X to Texas, making the state’s political direction particularly important to his companies.

The billionaire also invested heavily in Republican campaigns across the Lone Star State, including efforts to elect Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to the U.S. Senate.
Paxton ultimately lost to Democrat James Talarico, who became the first Democrat elected to represent Texas in the Senate in 36 years.
The defeat marked one of the most significant setbacks for Republicans on an election night that saw Democrats make substantial gains nationwide.
According to Forbes, at least 18 candidates backed by Musk in lower-profile races secured victories, demonstrating that his political investments were not entirely unsuccessful.
However, those wins were overshadowed by Republican losses in several high-profile contests where Musk and organizations associated with him had spent heavily.
The political shakeup also spilled into financial markets.

Shares of Tesla and SpaceX declined approximately 6% in premarket trading Wednesday as investors assessed how Democratic control of Congress and changes in Texas leadership could affect Musk’s companies.
Democrats are expected to pursue greater oversight of major corporations and could introduce additional restrictions affecting artificial intelligence, technology infrastructure and government contracts.
Those developments could create new challenges for Musk, whose companies operate in industries closely tied to federal regulation and government spending.
Despite the election setbacks, Elon Musk remains one of the wealthiest individuals in the world.
According to The New York Times, his estimated fortune stood near $898 billion following the election, leaving him with enormous financial resources even after his record political spending.
Musk’s election-related posts also drew attention because of his previous public support for Republican candidates.
Gizmodo reported that the billionaire deleted an Election Day message encouraging his followers to “vote red today.”
However, Musk’s public reaction Wednesday suggested he was more interested in mocking the situation than dwelling on the defeats.
His comments came as Republicans began confronting the political consequences of losing both the House and Senate, with Trump preparing to navigate a divided government during the final two years of his presidency.
