Democrats only need ‘a C+ kind of night’ to triumph in midterm elections: Joe Concha

Washington Examiner columnist Joe Concha emphasized the critical importance of the midterm elections for Republicans, underscoring the high stakes as Democrats need only a narrow victory to gain seats.

“The message is to go on the offense and how crucial these midterms are. We always say that ‘this is the most important election of our lifetimes.’ I think for Donald Trump and the Republican Party, this is,” Concha said on Fox News’s America Reports Wednesday.

“Democrats don’t have to have a great night in November. They don’t have to flip 30 seats, 20 seats; they’ve got to flip four. Think of it as like a C+ kind of night,” Concha said.

Concha added that this means the Trump agenda could be sidelined for two years heading into the 2028 presidential election.

“They [Republicans] need to remind voters that every Democrat voted for the Inflation Reduction Act, for example, and that didn’t do anything to lower inflation,” Concha said.

Democrats passed the bill in 2022, vowing it would lower inflation and everyday costs for Americans. Republicans maintained that the bill would worsen inflation. The inflation rate currently sits at 3.5%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“In the end, go on the offensive and remember what Democrats have presided over over four years under the Biden administration,” Concha said.

Concha argued that immigration used to be a top issue for voters when borders were open. Since Trump closed the borders, voters are focusing on the economy. “Immigration, it was solved so quickly that that’s no longer an issue that people talk about. It’s always the economy, stupid, going back to James Carville back in 1992,” Concha said.

The phrase “It’s the economy, stupid,” is a famous political slogan from former President Bill Clinton’s presidential run. It was coined by James Carville, one of Clinton’s lead strategists.

“As long as people feel that things are too expensive, then they may say the party in power is responsible, and therefore Democrats deserve a chance,” Concha said.

Concha highlighted the Iran war as a source of economic strain for Americans, as it contributes to high gas prices in the United States.

“I think it’s a hand-in-hand kind of thing. The longer the Iran war goes on for, the longer gas prices won’t come down to a level that’s acceptable to Americans,” Concha said.

Concha argued Iran is going to “try to run out the clock to the midterm elections and just try to make this thing go on for as long as possible, because they know that if gas prices are high, that’s a hard thing to sell to Americans.”

Concha said a great way to reach young voters is through social media, because “if you can get it for free, then why not?”

Trump’s Cabinet members recently announced they are joining TikTok.

“We always heard about in past elections how campaign ads ‘we need a lot of billions of dollars for campaign ads to get to people,’ that’s not how you get to people anymore, especially young voters,” Concha said. “So yeah, embrace TikTok, embrace X, Facebook, Instagram, whatever you have to do to get to voters.”
