The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has officially selected South Carolina as the first state on its calendar for the 2028 presidential primary.
With South Carolina first, followed by Nevada, the Democratic Party is looking to elevate states with a more demographically diverse voter base.
Democrats have a large African American primary electorate in South Carolina, while Nevada has many Latino voters and powerful labor interests.
“Party officials set South Carolina first on Jan. 22, 2028, followed by Nevada (Feb. 1), New Hampshire (Feb. 8), New Mexico (Feb. 15), Michigan (Feb. 22) and Virginia on (Feb. 29),” The New York Times stated.
More from The New York Times:
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, who’s widely considered among the 2028 Democratic frontrunners, said the new lineup will “make any candidate get out and earn it.”
“For too long, southern Democrats have been overlooked, left out, sometimes even looked down upon,” Beshear said.
