Dana White has made his decision after President Trump offered the UFC boss one of the most visible jobs in Washington: White House press secretary.
White declined the offer, according to a source familiar with the matter, bringing a quick end to a proposal that had Washington arguing over whether the president was serious, joking, or doing a little of both.
The offer first broke publicly Saturday afternoon:
President Trump described White as a fighter and warrior and urged him to accept. He also joked that the UFC chief should bring several famous fighters with him as assistants to help defend the administration against the “Lunatic Left.”
White added to the suspense by sharing an image of himself behind the White House briefing-room podium with the words “On to the next chapter.” For a few hours, it looked possible that one of the most combative promoters in American sports might be preparing to take questions from the White House press corps.
CNN reports that a source familiar with the matter said White declined. One White House aide characterized the offer as a joke, but the president’s public message, White’s Instagram response and the communications director’s reaction kept the speculation alive long enough to dominate the afternoon.
White House communications director Steven Cheung enthusiastically backed the idea in public:
The choice would have been unconventional, but the relationship behind it is real. White has supported President Trump for years, spoke at the last three Republican National Conventions and helped connect the president with younger men and the online personalities who reach them.
He also worked closely with the administration on the UFC event held at the White House this summer for America’s 250th anniversary. President Trump has repeatedly credited White with introducing him to younger audiences outside traditional political media.
CBS News notes that the press secretary position has been open since Katie Zacharia left after only five days in the role. Karoline Leavitt stepped aside in August after roughly a year and a half, leaving the administration searching for someone who can handle a hostile briefing room during a difficult political stretch.
That vacancy is no small assignment. Democrats are preparing to take control of Congress, investigations are coming, and every daily briefing will become a test of whether the White House can keep its message focused.
The proposal drew praise from Trump allies who imagined White sparring with reporters. It also drew criticism from conservatives who believed the moment called for a seasoned communications professional rather than a headline-grabbing stunt.
One pro-Trump commentator put that frustration plainly:
White’s refusal does not diminish his friendship with the president. It simply means the man who built the UFC into a global powerhouse is staying in the fight business instead of stepping behind the White House podium.
President Trump still needs a press secretary, and the next choice will face one of the toughest communications environments of his second term. Whoever accepts will need White’s toughness, even if White himself has decided the job is not for him.
