The town council in a Midwestern American enclave, Ottumwa, Iowa, has opened its meeting with a petition to “Hail Satan,” and the resulting backlash triggered the council to shut down comments to its posted video.

The invocation included addressing “Dear dark father” as well as a rejection of “arcane doctrines.” It seeks to pursue ‘luciferian impulses to eat of the tree of knowledge.”

The Gateway Pundit opined, “The moral decay forced upon America by radical leftists has reached a terrifying new low right in the heart of the Midwest. An Iowa city council opened its regular meeting this week by standing for an invocation addressed to a ‘dark father,’ praising the ‘luciferian impulse,’ and closing with ‘Hail Satan.'”

Reports charged it was “resident and former council member Matt Dalbey who sought Satan to help kick off the meeting.”

In a private message, carried by reports, Dalbey claimed the prayer is used at the Satanic Temple of Iowa, where he is member, “but has nothing to do with the belief in a satanic deity.”

Among those responding was Rick Bick, a pastor at New Life Center, who called for action to “reverse this curse that was put on our city.”

“That ‘Hail Satan’ is not welcome here.”

Council Member Cara Galloway then stood in defense of “Hail Satan,” charging that Bick should reserve his comments for a time during the meeting when citizens can address the council.

Bick explained, “I appreciate what Miss Galloway is saying, but that was a curse put on a city when he said, ‘Hail Satan’ and ‘oh dark god.’ Most of you know that, and we need to just stop and reverse it. It needs to be done now.”

When Mayor Ben Foote then called for 30 seconds of silence so those in attendance could pray or reflect, Galloway interrupted and demanded the meeting “move forward,” according to the Ottumwa Courier.
