BREAKING: A National Guard member was shot near Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. last night.

Per authorities, seven or eight guardsmen were in a van when they heard what sounded like a fight and moved in to help. A suspect refused to drop his gun and opened fire.

The guardsmen fired back. One Guard member was hit, and so was the suspect. Both were taken to a local hospital.

These men and women ran toward danger to protect people they’d never met, and one of them took a bullet for it.

Pray for this guardsman’s recovery. Anyone who still says D.C. doesn’t need the Guard should look at what happened last night.

Alleged footage of the incident is going viral online:

Thankfully, the National Guard member’s injuries are not life threatening, and he has already been released from the hospital.

WTOP reported:

The service member was treated at a hospital and released, a Joint Task Force-District of Columbia spokesperson said in a statement to WTOP.

The task force overseeing the National Guard troops deployed over the past year in D.C. also said that it’s coordinating with D.C. police, which are leading the investigation.

In a post on X, Ward 6 Council member Charles Allen said the D.C. Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration, or ABCA, was also investigating the incident, which he said happened outside Cafe 8, a restaurant and bar on 8th Street SE.

He also called on ABCA and the police to use their emergency powers to temporarily shut the business down.

“What we have been seeing is a pattern of violence taking place outside this establishment on Barracks Row. It’s been going on now for a year and a half, two years, and so I know MPD has had to put a lot of resources into this corridor. I know that my other businesses on the corridor are sick and tired of it. My residents are sick and tired of it,” Allen later told reporters.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said she was briefed on the incident during the night and again on Monday morning. She referred most questions, including one about Allen’s call for an emergency closure, to police.

“There’s a protocol that MPD follows if an ABC licensee hasn’t cooperated or hasn’t done what they’re supposed to do in an incident. So MPD will provide that update,” she said.

The suspect who shot the National Guard member has been identified as as 41-year-old Jerrell Jackson.

He has been arrested and is facing multiple serious charges.

Per Fox 5 DC:

In an update shortly before 3 p.m., D.C. Police identified the shooting suspect as 41-year-old Jerrell Jackson, of Southeast, D.C. He was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Assault with a dangerous weapon
  • Assault on a police officer and emergency personnel
  • Carrying a pistol without a license
  • Felon in possession of a firearm

While D.C. is a heck of a lot safer than it was before President Trump sent the National Guard in, there is obviously still work to do.

Please keep our National Guard in your prayers as they continue cracking down on crime and making our nation’s capital great again!
