Xavier Becerra is running to be the governor of California, not the president of the United States. Given how obsessed he is with talking about President Donald Trump, you have to wonder if Becerra knows that.
Becerra, the former state attorney general and Biden administration’s Health and Human Services secretary, took to the debate stage against Republican opponent Steve Hilton. Becerra obsessively invoked Trump’s name, with local media reporting that it appeared nearly 50 times in the debate transcript. For comparison, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), the incumbent governor whom both men are running to replace, was mentioned up to seven times. This was in a debate that lasted only one hour.
Becerra personifies the California Democratic Party in the sense that he is profoundly lazy. He knows that Trump is unpopular in California and thus believes he doesn’t need to debate policy with Hilton. He can simply tie Hilton to Trump over and over again like a broken record. It does not matter that Democrats such as Newsom have run California for the past decade, that Trump has little control over anything California does, or that Trump will be out of office in two years. Becerra can just repeat “Trump bad” and coast into office with a 20-point win.
That is why Becerra won’t commit to anything beyond vague generalizations about what California should do, promising that the state will build houses, save money, and provide healthcare without offering any details about what those promises entail. On some issues, such as California’s impending ban on gas-powered cars, he won’t take a position at all. It is also why Becerra has hardly campaigned since advancing as one of the top two candidates in the primary.
CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR DEBATE TURNS INTO TRUMP-NEWSOM PROXY WAR
Now that he is not running against any other Democrats, Becerra isn’t even trying to win — he thinks the governor’s office should be gifted to him. California Democrats don’t think they ever have to do anything to gain power. They think voters should simply give it to them because they are not Republicans. When something goes wrong, they think they should just blame Republicans, as Newsom has done with California’s gas prices, which remain higher than those in every other state despite Trump being the president of all 50 states.
Becerra will almost definitely win in November because that is how California’s political gravity works. He will then continue to run the state into the ground because he does not feel responsible for any of California’s failures. He will simply blame Trump or a future GOP presidential nominee, such as JD Vance or Marco Rubio. California Democrats have contempt for their own voters and will continue to do so until those voters show that they are willing to choose something different.
