Newsom keeps artificial intelligence as official term in California after federal ‘super intelligence’ order

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) signed an executive order pushing back on efforts by President Donald Trump and Elon Musk to use the term “super intelligence.”

“I just signed an executive order permanently declaring Artificial Intelligence ‘Artificial Intelligence’ in California,” Newsom said on X. “You’re welcome, America.”

The move comes as a direct challenge to a recent Trump executive order that renamed AI “super intelligence.” The president told reporters Tuesday that the name change was “because it’s not artificial, we all agree on that.”

Newsom cemented that California will continue to refer to AI as artificial intelligence while stating that changing the name doesn’t change the risks or concerns associated with the development of the technology.

“While language and choice of terminology can have significance, purporting to change something’s name cannot distract a person of normal intelligence from recognizing that impotent and craven failure to take action to address well-documented emerging security and safety risks posed by that thing,” the executive order said.

Democrats and tech leaders have openly expressed concerns about the rapid development of AI, pushing for more regulation. Progressives, including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Greg Casar (D-TX), have been advocating for Congress to take action.

Trump has maintained a pro-AI stance, saying the United States needs to win against global competitors such as China.
