AOC doubles down on radical transgender activism

When Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) recently quipped that “Woke 1 was crazy,” some thought the progressive darling might attempt a more centrist rebrand ahead of 2028 presidential speculation. But Ocasio-Cortez just shattered any illusion that she’s moving away from extreme left-wing ideology with new comments doubling down on the most extreme version of transgender activism.

Here’s what happened. The New York congresswoman was asked about transgender issues at a More Perfect University event Thursday night. A transgender-identifying questioner, a biological male, asked, “Trans people in America feel that we have been abandoned by the Democratic Party, that we are a losing issue, that it’s not worth defending us … what do you say to that?”

“They’re wrong!” Ocasio-Cortez replied. “The moment you compromise the rights of a trans person in America, you compromise the rights of every citizen of America. I support the rights of trans women because I’m a girl’s girl.”

Huh?

Just like that, Ocasio-Cortez incoherently reaffirmed her support for some of the most fringe and controversial ideas in modern American politics.

Of course, people who identify as transgender are entitled to the very same constitutional and legal rights as anyone else, whether that’s their right to free expression, due process, to vote, to own firearms in self-defense, etc. And I have always maintained that, as adults, they should be free to live their personal lives however they wish and modify their bodies however they like. But that’s not what’s at issue here. The contentious questions at the heart of the transgender debate emerge when biology and self-identity conflict; when there are competing rights claims — and, whether Ocasio-Cortez admits it or not, only one side can get their way.

You either have female-only sports separated by biological sex, or, as Ocasio-Cortez has consistently supported, you don’t. That results in absurd and unfair situations like female athletes facing exposure to male genitalia in the locker room, having to physically wrestle biological male opponents, or, most recently, losing out on first place in a cross-country meet to a male athlete who “switched” genders mid-season when he went from 75th place among boys to dominating the girls. What part of supporting that insanity is consistent with being a “girl’s girl”?

And the sports issue is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the many ways in which extreme transgender activism undercuts a genuine understanding of women’s rights. Transgender activist groups, which are already lauding Ocasio-Cortez’s newest comments, have fought successfully to get biological males who self-identify as women placed in women’s prisons in “progressive” states like California — even sex offenders! In some cases, these transgender-identifying inmates are accused of sexually assaulting female inmates they gain access to under these insane policies. Is supporting that what makes Ocasio-Cortez a “girl’s girl”?

Then, of course, there’s the debate over whether female-only spaces are allowed to exist, or whether they must be open to some biological males. This results in absurd situations like Washington state forcing a Korean spa — where women bathe nude — to admit male patrons with penises. (You know, just girly things!)

SUPREME COURT DECLINES TO LET TRUMP END TRANSGENDER SURGERIES FOR PRISON INMATES

When it comes to these fundamental conflicts, elected officials have to choose. And, time and time again, Ocasio-Cortez has sided with extreme gender ideology over common sense and biological reality. She may get away with it as a member of Congress representing a deep-blue district, or even if she runs for the Senate in New York. Yet if Ocasio-Cortez actually has presidential ambitions, her extreme record as a “girl’s girl” will surely come back to haunt her.

Just ask Kamala Harris.
