Airbnb co-founder and White House official Joe Gebbia cut an $8 million check to the Republican-backed ballot measure that would require voter identification in California.

Californians for Voter ID has received other seven-figure donations in recent weeks as the committee seeks to get Proposition 39 across the finish line in November.

If approved at the voting booth next month, the measure would require voters to present government-issued identification for in-person voting or provide the last four digits of their IDs for mail-in voting.

Gebbia’s latest political donation is the largest he has ever made. The Airbnb executive has shifted significantly to the right in the past two years. Gebbia said he voted for President Donald Trump in 2024, but just a year before, he contributed $26,600 to the Biden-Harris ticket.

After Trump won the 2024 presidential election and returned to the White House, Gebbia joined the Department of Government Efficiency and later became the nation’s first chief design officer. In his new role, he leads the National Design Studio to redesign the federal government’s websites for users.

California Republican state Assemblyman Carl DeMaio has led the ballot-measure campaign with support of conservative megadonors, such as Richard Uihlein. The Illinois billionaire has contributed $17 million to the campaign for Proposition 39.

Xavier Becerra, the Democratic nominee for California governor, is spearheading the opposition campaign to Proposition 39 in coordination with the American Civil Liberties Union and the California Donor Table. The coalition has not raised as much money as the Republican-led campaign.
