The White House just put a number on the radical Left’s socialist wish list, and it is almost too big to comprehend: roughly $49 trillion over ten years.
That works out to approximately $355,000 for every American household.
Speaker Mike Johnson warned that American families would be forced to pay for the Left’s agenda through punishing taxes, higher prices, or a mountain of new debt.
The new analysis is not a vague campaign talking point. It is a policy-by-policy estimate prepared by President Trump’s Council of Economic Advisers using the Democratic Socialists of America’s own 2026 platform.
The Council of Economic Advisers examined eight pillars of that agenda: mass student-debt cancellation and free tuition, open borders and mass amnesty, abolishing police and prisons, Medicare for All, universal rent control, the Green New Deal, a government-mandated 32-hour workweek, and a five-percent annual wealth tax.
Seven of those policies could be scored directly against the federal budget. The report estimates a net ten-year burden of $48.9 trillion after accepting the wealth tax’s projected revenue for purposes of the calculation.
The gross cost before that assumed revenue comes to $52.84 trillion.
The White House also created a public tool showing where the money goes and what paying the bill would mean for working families.
If Washington borrowed the money, the CEA projects the added debt could push 30-year mortgage rates above 12 percent and produce cumulative excess inflation of 130 to 160 percentage points over the decade.
If Washington tried to cover the tab with taxes instead, the report projects a 28.4 percent reduction in after-tax hourly wages for the average household — about $22,000 in lost annual income — along with a 14.6 percent reduction in real economic output compared with the baseline.
Either way, somebody pays. And that somebody is not a faceless government account.
It is the American worker trying to buy groceries, pay a mortgage, build a business, and save for retirement.
The immigration chapter is especially revealing. The report places the ten-year fiscal cost of open borders and mass amnesty between $440 billion and $613 billion, using a $530 billion midpoint in its central table.
The White House says amnesty would add between $3.6 billion and $4.7 billion per year in SNAP costs, between $2.3 billion and $3 billion per year in federal housing assistance, and between $30 billion and $40 billion per year in Medicaid spending. Combined, those three programs alone would add an estimated $361 billion to $475 billion over a decade.
Policy analysts immediately zeroed in on the scale of the new estimate.
The contrast with President Trump’s border policy could hardly be sharper.
The administration says Border Patrol has now gone 16 consecutive months without releasing an illegal alien into the country, southwest-border apprehensions were down 94 percent in August compared with the Biden-era monthly average, and more than three million illegal aliens have left the United States since President Trump returned to office.
The Real Cost of Socialism in America also translates the report into concrete household consequences. Under the borrowing scenario, the White House says prices could climb so sharply that goods costing $100 today would cost between $230 and $260 in ten years.
The policy-specific estimates include as many as 6.9 million lost jobs from a mandated 32-hour workweek, 3.3 million fewer rental homes under universal rent control, and a $2,100 reduction in the median 401(k) under the modeled wealth tax.
The Green New Deal portion is estimated to cost $91,000 per household, while gas-heated homes could face at least $340 more per year. Those are not abstract accounting entries; they are hits to housing, retirement savings, work, and the monthly family budget.
Socialism always arrives wrapped in promises that someone else will pay.
This report puts the bill on the table before the radical Left gets the chance to stick it to the American people.
