President Trump just handed Montana a major new role in the race to keep America’s military ahead of its adversaries.
Speaking at a packed rally in Kalispell, the president announced that the Department of War will establish a new military “super range” in the state to test the weapons and systems that will define the next generation of warfare.
The planned range will support testing of autonomous weapons, space systems, electronic warfare technology, and both supersonic and hypersonic weapons.
Here is President Trump making the announcement himself:
“Montana will help ensure the American military always reigns supreme,” President Trump told the crowd.
He also made clear that Montana beat out competition for the project. Other states wanted the range, he said, before crediting Republican Senators Tim Sheehy and Steve Daines for relentlessly pressing the case.
That persistence matters because America’s weapons are advancing faster than many of the facilities used to test them.
Montana Free Press reports that the Senate Armed Services Committee’s version of the 2027 National Defense Authorization Act includes $10 million for a feasibility study of an advanced Montana training range. The legislation has not yet received a full Senate vote, and the administration has not publicly identified the final site, construction cost, or operating timetable.
Senator Sheehy explained the choice facing the country as rivals move quickly in hypersonics, electronic warfare, targeting, and autonomous systems:
Montana is a natural fit. It offers enormous stretches of open land, a long military tradition, existing aerospace infrastructure, and the room needed to test systems that travel farther and faster than older proving grounds were built to handle.
The War Zone notes that future military “kill webs” can extend thousands of miles, while advanced missiles, drones, electronic-warfare systems, and directed-energy weapons increasingly require linked airspace and realistic combat-scale testing. The Pentagon’s own testing office has warned that current open-air range capacity is not sufficient for the threats and weapons now emerging.
Montana already hosts the Montana Spaceport and Test Range, the Limestone Hills Innovation and Test Campus, Malmstrom Air Force Base, and other training airspace. The administration has not yet said whether the new complex will expand or connect those facilities.
The defense-technology analysis lays out why the new capacity could become strategically important:
This is what “peace through strength” looks like when it moves from a slogan to physical infrastructure.
President Trump is not waiting for China, Russia, or anyone else to set the pace. He is pushing America to build the places, systems, and testing capacity needed to dominate the battlefield before the next conflict begins.
