It’s not just the WNBA. An incident at a professional soccer game in Portland, Oregon, demonstrated the animosity many fans have to attendees who support the concept of only women competing in women’s sports.
During Friday’s game at Providence Park between the Portland Thorns and North Carolina Courage, people wearing “XX-XY Athletics” T-shirts, which have gained popularity among women’s basketball fans, were attacked by others, some smashed with so-called transgender flags.
According to Fox News, it was the women-supporting fans who were removed from the stadium by security personnel after the incident.
“We were attacked by fans. We were hit with flags,” Activist Amy Sousa told OutKick.
Commentator Brandi Kruse was at the game to support women’s sports and reports that security restrained her arm behind her back while escorting her through the stands. She questioned why her group was being removed after being attacked.
Both Sousa and Kruse have been involved in organizing in-game support for WNBA guard Sophie Cunningham who made headlines earlier this year after expressing support for women’s sports.
Fox reported:
“OutKick reporter Matt Calkins also had his phone knocked from his hand and beer poured on his neck while documenting the confrontation. A security guard pulled his credential from around his neck during an interview with Sousa, returning it seconds later.
“Security director Jim McCausland said he did not have time to speak.”
While the Portland Police Bureau claims the incident is “under investigation,” a spokesperson from the U.S. Justice Department told Fox News Digital:
“The Justice Department is aware of these reports and will review the matter thoroughly. Where the facts and the law warrant action, the Department will not hesitate to act.”
A different DOJ official said, “Based on what is known so far, the conduct described appears to raise viewpoint discrimination and First Amendment questions rather than sex discrimination. The Department is reviewing it.”
Approximately 20 attendees wearing XX-XY shirts covered them through the first half, then revealed them and unfurled a large “Save Women’s Sports” banner as the second half began.
For some fans, that act of free speech had to be countered, violently.
Here is one video account of the incident (Warning: Obscenity):
