What does it actually mean for Christians to “bless Israel”? Is it simply political support for the modern Jewish state? Sympathy for the Jewish people? Or is something much deeper at stake?

Three years after the October 7 massacre, Elizabeth Farah sits down with Rabbi Pesach Wolicki for a conversation that goes beyond war, politics and the Middle East to confront a foundational biblical question: Who is Israel, and what does God require of the nations in their relationship to His covenant people?

For Wolicki, the answer begins with an astonishing historical fact. The Jewish people endured nearly 2,000 years of exile, persecution and repeated attempts to destroy them, yet survived as a distinct people and returned to their ancestral homeland. He argues that this seemingly impossible history is exactly what Scripture foretold, and that Israel itself stands before the world as living testimony that God keeps His promises.

That makes the world’s obsession with Israel something far more significant than geopolitics.

“Everyone in the world has an opinion about the Jews,” Wolicki tells Farah. Why? He believes the answer reaches all the way back to God’s everlasting covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and His declaration: “I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse.”

Farah and Wolicki dig deeply into what that promise means for Christians today. Farah turns to Ezekiel 35 and the ancient hatred of Edom, God’s judgment against those who covet the land He gave Israel, and the remarkable biblical connection between blaspheming Israel and blaspheming God Himself.

Wolicki then takes the argument further. Why does God tell the nations to bless Israel in the first place?

His answer is that Israel’s story is ultimately not about Israel. It is about God. Just as biblical miracles revealed God’s power over nature, Wolicki argues that Israel’s extraordinary history reveals God’s power over history. God foretold Israel’s exile, preservation and eventual return so that when the nations witnessed it, they would know that He is the Lord.

That is why Wolicki says antisemitism is ultimately “not actually a Jewish issue at all.” The world’s response to Israel becomes a spiritual test: Do we recognize God’s faithfulness in what He has done with Israel, or reject it?

The conversation culminates in Psalm 83, prayed throughout Israel after October 7, where Israel’s enemies declare: “Come, let us destroy them from being a nation, that the name of Israel may be remembered no more.” For Farah and Wolicki, that ancient hatred has never disappeared. But neither has God’s covenant.

For Christians, that leaves a question that cannot be dismissed as politics:

Who is Israel? What does it really mean to bless Israel? And if God has not abandoned His promises to Israel, what should Christians do about it?
