President Donald Trump is shedding new light on his decision to replace White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, praising his longtime political ally while acknowledging that changes were necessary following Republicans’ devastating midterm election losses.
Speaking to reporters outside the White House on Friday afternoon, Trump addressed the leadership shakeup just hours after announcing that senior adviser Stephen Miller would take over the powerful position.
Despite removing Wiles from the role, the president had nothing but praise for her performance.
“I think @SusieWiles has done a very good job, great job.”
Trump then offered a brief explanation for the decision, suggesting that leadership changes are sometimes necessary even when an official has performed well.
“We’ve got to make moves. Sometimes in life, you have to make moves.”
The remarks came during an exchange with reporters before the president departed for Florida, offering additional insight into one of the most significant personnel changes of his second administration.
Trump announced Friday that Miller, currently serving as deputy White House chief of staff for policy, would assume the top position Monday, Nov. 9.
Wiles, meanwhile, will transition to Trump’s political operation rather than leave his orbit entirely.
The president previously praised both officials in his announcement on Truth Social, identifying Miller as one of his most trusted advisers and thanking Wiles for her service.

The leadership change comes just three days after Democrats captured both chambers of Congress, delivering a major setback to Republicans and raising questions about the administration’s strategy heading into the final two years of Trump’s presidency.
However, Donald Trump did not explicitly connect Wiles’ departure to the election results during his remarks Friday.
Wiles, one of the president’s closest political advisers, also addressed the transition in an emotional statement posted to X.
“Today is my last day as White House Chief of Staff,” Susie Wiles wrote Friday. “Serving President Trump in the White House has been the honor of a lifetime. I’m so proud to have been a part of what we’ve accomplished together from securing our border and cutting taxes to strengthening our economy and putting America First.”

The veteran Republican strategist expressed appreciation for her colleagues and made clear that her commitment to Trump would continue despite the change in responsibilities.
“More than anything, I’m grateful for the extraordinary people I’ve had the privilege of working alongside,” she continued. “While my role may be changing, my commitment to the President and the mission never will.”
Wiles played a central role in Trump’s successful 2024 presidential campaign before becoming the first woman to serve as White House chief of staff.
Her experience managing political operations and navigating Republican Party politics made her an influential figure throughout the president’s return to Washington.
Miller, meanwhile, has established himself as one of the administration’s most prominent advocates for tougher immigration enforcement and border security.

His promotion places a longtime MAGA loyalist in charge of coordinating White House operations as Trump prepares to confront a Democratic-controlled Congress.
The move has already drawn criticism from Democratic lawmakers and liberal commentators who oppose Stephen Miller‘s immigration policies.
Nevertheless, Trump has made clear that Miller remains a trusted member of his inner circle.
The White House has not provided additional details about Wiles’ new responsibilities within the president’s political operation.
And despite the timing of the shakeup, neither Trump nor Wiles has publicly described the transition as a punishment for Tuesday’s Republican election losses.
For now, the president is standing by his praise of Wiles while moving forward with a new chief of staff.
Miller is scheduled to take over Monday, Nov. 9, as Wiles shifts to Trump’s political operation following nearly two years managing the White House.
