U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn.
The federal investigation of Ilhan Omar, a Somali immigrant elected to Congress in a Somali immigrant-dominated district in Minnesota, now includes interviews with her family members as well as her DNA, according to the New York Post.
Omar, a Democrat firebrand whose agenda in recent years largely has been to attack President Donald Trump, reportedly is under federal investigation on suspicion she may have been involved in immigration fraud when she obtained her U.S. citizenship.
Reports have suggested she could become subject to denaturalization and deportation proceedings if found guilty.
Further, there are suspicions of immigration fraud regarding widespread reports that at one point she married her brother to try to get him a status in the U.S.
And then there are the unique circumstances with her finances, where her public disclosures showed her net worth exploding from about $50,000 to $30 million in a year, and then plummeting back down as quickly.
The Post reported prosecutors obtained her DNA and are planning to use that evidence to “try to prove Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., committed immigration fraud.”
“People familiar with the years-long criminal probe said the feds have made use of whistleblowers, government records and now obtained DNA in an effort to substantiate decade-old allegations that Omar — and possibly members of her family like her father — defrauded immigration authorities,” said the report, citing sources.
“One source said the DNA evidence was critical to proving an allegation that Omar married her brother when she wed Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in 2009 because she was trying to help him get a green card — which never came to fruition.”
Federal investigators raided her home, taking boxes of evidence with them.
The report’s sources suggested “the execution of the search warrant on Oct. 12, coupled with the DNA and additional evidence, has provided a solid basis to bring charges of conspiracy to commit some form of immigration fraud before a grand jury, stemming from the probe initiated by the Minnesota U.S. Attorney’s Office.”
Some of the allegations may fall outside the statute of limitations, but former federal prosecutor told the publication even so, all such evidence supports the concept of a general conspiracy.
“If you argue a conspiracy, you can allege overt acts in furtherance of the conspiracy that are outside the statute of limitations,” said Neama Rahmini.
It is D.C. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro who is reviewing issues relating to the congresswoman’s finances — including entries in House disclosures that resulted in Omar deflating her net worth by tens of millions of dollars in the last year due to an unexplained accounting “discrepancy.”
The Washington Post earlier reported Elmi, divorced from Omar in 2017, apparently applied for and then withdrew his application for a marriage-based green card in 2019 when authorities south additional evidence of his marriage to Omar.
Tom Homan, border czar, confirmed days ago there’s a “strong case” that possibly could result in an effort to denaturalize, possibly deport, Omar.
One question unanswered is the decision Omar made when elected to Congress to order her birth date, in many locations, changed from 1981 to 1982. That could affect whether she legitimately obtained citizenship as a juvenile, or not.
She long has denied any misbehavior and her lawyers say there’s “no legitimate basis” for claims of wrongdoing.
The Gateway Pundit reported it was unclear how Omar’s DNA was obtained.
CNN reported that the investigation into Ilhan Omar may widen to a conspiracy case as several members of Omar’s family have been subpoenaed, the report said.
Bill Melugin of Fox reported the investigators are in possession of her personal passport as well.
Podcaster Gunther Eagleman reported investigators reportedly already have started interviewing family members who were subpoenaed.
Omar’s sister, “reportedly sat down with federal investigators last week. Per three sources who spoke to Fox News, she talked to them voluntarily after the search of the D.C. home Omar shares with her husband,” the report said.
