CNN went on the air Thursday night claiming it had been shut out of the guest arrivals for Chinese President Xi Jinping’s White House state dinner.
The White House fired back with a blunt explanation: the arrival was a pre-credentialed event, not an open invitation for every reporter who wanted access.

The Gateway Pundit reported that Erin Burnett introduced the complaint during CNN’s evening coverage as guests were arriving for the state dinner.
White House correspondent Kristen Holmes said the network had asked to be credentialed for the guest arrivals but never received a response. CNN therefore covered the event without a team inside that particular arrival area.
The report came after a separate fight over general White House access for CNN, MS NOW and Politico. A federal judge had issued a temporary order restoring the outlets’ press credentials, but event-specific entry remained a different question from possession of a White House hard pass.
The outlet also noted that President Trump had criticized CNN and MS NOW earlier in the day, accusing the networks of refusing to cover the elaborate state arrival ceremony for Xi and first lady Peng Liyuan.

There were actually two separate arrivals on Thursday, a distinction that matters in this dispute.
The White House announced that President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump would host a formal state arrival ceremony Thursday morning across the South Lawn, State Floor and Rose Garden.
That daytime ceremony featured 479 service members, national anthems, military demonstrations and a flyover by a B-2 Spirit and four F-22 Raptors. It was the large televised event President Trump later said CNN and MS NOW had declined to cover.
The evening event was different. The official schedule said President Trump and the first lady would greet Xi and Peng at the North Portico before a state dinner in the East Room.
Between the two arrivals, Melania Trump and Peng were also scheduled to visit the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art as part of the state-visit program.

When CNN complained about missing the evening arrivals, the White House Rapid Response account rejected the suggestion that the network had been improperly barred.
Its answer was direct: press access was limited to reporters credentialed in advance, and a general White House pass did not place CNN on the state-dinner arrival list.
That response draws a line between general access to White House grounds and entry to a specific controlled event. A restored hard pass does not automatically place a network on every event’s credential list.
CNN said it asked and received no answer. The White House said the event required pre-credentialing and pushed back on the network’s framing.
Whatever one thinks of the larger court battle, those are the two competing claims here—and the White House made clear it was not accepting CNN’s version without a fight.
