President Trump’s Justice Department is putting $25 million behind local police departments willing to do what sanctuary politicians have spent years obstructing: locate criminal illegal aliens, break trafficking operations, and get violent offenders off American streets.
Attorney General Todd Blanche announced the new Assisting Neighborhoods and Governments with Enforcement of Laws program Thursday during the first Attorney General’s Summit on Victims of Violent Crime.
The acronym is ANGEL, and the name is deliberate. The program honors Americans killed by criminal illegal aliens and illicit drugs while giving state, local, and tribal law enforcement new resources to prevent more families from suffering the same devastation.
The Justice Department announced the program and its mission directly:
DOJ’s rules make the money operational: officers, courtrooms, detention, transportation, intelligence work, and the logistics needed to move cases forward.
The Justice Department says the money can fund operations to locate and apprehend illegal aliens who have committed crimes, collect intelligence on gangs, investigate and prosecute crimes committed by aliens, and pursue drug and human traffickers.
Eligible agencies can also use the grants for related court operations, temporary criminal detention, prisoner transportation, vehicle maintenance, logistics, and other support needed to help officers participate in Homeland Security Task Force operations.
Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward said the program is especially meant for police departments in states that have refused to give local officers the support they need to protect their own communities.
The department tied those priorities directly to families harmed by violent crime and trafficking. Its announcement says no additional family should be forced to endure the life-altering devastation already suffered by Angel Families, and it describes coordinated, intelligence-led enforcement as the path to disrupting that violence before another innocent American is killed.

The funding comes from the BIDEN Reimbursement Fund created by President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act. That fund authorizes grants to state, local, and tribal governments for seven specified public-safety purposes.
The Bureau of Justice Assistance lists the ANGEL solicitation as open and competitive. The Grants.gov deadline is October 20, and completed applications must reach JustGrants by October 27.
The opportunity was posted Thursday under identification number O-BJA-2026-172778. It uses a two-step federal application process: agencies must first submit through Grants.gov by 11:59 p.m. Eastern on October 20, then complete the full application in JustGrants by 8:59 p.m. Eastern on October 27.
That schedule gives police departments and other eligible state, local, and tribal agencies roughly a month to assemble their proposals. Because the award is competitive, communities that want the funding will need their local leadership to act rather than assume Washington will send the money automatically.
The political fight is already beginning. Retired Illinois police chief Thomas Weitzel warned that some mayors and other local officials will likely order their police chiefs not to apply.
That warning exposes the choice sanctuary-city politicians now face.
They can keep protecting an ideology that shields criminal illegal aliens from federal enforcement, or they can let local officers pursue federal money to dismantle gangs, stop traffickers, and protect American families.
President Trump’s administration has put the resources on the table. Voters will be able to see which local leaders choose public safety—and which ones choose politics.
