Former Vice President Kamala Harris found herself prodding a crowd for a reaction after one of her punchlines landed with a thud during a Democratic campaign stop in Sacramento.
Harris was campaigning Friday for Dr. Richard Pan, the Democratic candidate in California’s 6th Congressional District, when she took aim at Rep. Kevin Kiley, a former Republican now running as an independent.
Trying to paint Kiley as politically slippery, Harris mocked his attempt to distance himself from his past party affiliation.
‘Oh, I’m not that guy. I’m now this guy,’ she said in footage obtained by the Sacramento Bee. ‘Well, this guy who was that guy and is still this guy and that guy.’
The line was followed by a pause as Harris appeared to wait for a bigger response from the room.
‘Come on now,’ she said, before laughing.
The moment quickly became the standout clip from an otherwise routine campaign event as Harris returned to the trail ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
Harris has been stepping up her political appearances as Democrats push to regain control of Congress, with stops planned for candidates across several battleground states.

The former vice president has continued to draw speculation about another White House run in 2028, but she has publicly insisted that the midterms are her immediate focus.
‘Right now, midterms, midterms, midterms full time occupying my thoughts, my mind and my work,’ she said during a September interview on Megan Rapinoe’s podcast.
Democrats need a net gain of three House seats to reach the 218 needed for a majority, making races like Pan’s part of a wider national push.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has also expanded its offensive into Republican-held territory, adding several GOP districts to its ‘Red to Blue’ program.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has projected confidence about the party’s chances.
‘House Democrats are poised to take back the majority,’ party leader Hakeem Jeffries said.
But Harris’ Sacramento stop generated attention for a different reason, with her ‘Come on now’ plea after the joke becoming the viral moment of the event.
