Vice President JD Vance announced Tuesday that President Donald Trump is invoking the Defense Production Act to expand the Delek oil refinery in Tyler, Texas.
Vance was in Tyler to campaign for Ken Paxton and other Republican candidates when he made the announcement.
“We want millions of gallons of commercial-grade and military spec fuel to come out of this refinery, in addition to what it’s already producing,” he told the crowd. “What that means for you and your families is lower costs to fly from one place to another. It means lower costs to drive your car into work every single day. It means a more reliable energy supply, but also a stronger national defense, and it will also mean hundreds of good-paying new jobs.”
TRUMP SAYS RUSSIAN DIESEL DEAL ISN’T FOR THE US: ‘THAT’S A WORLD DEAL’
“And what it really means, and what I care most about, is that it means more opportunities for Texans, for your kids and your grandkids, to build a life without having to leave the community that they love,” Vance added.
The Trump administration has taken a number of steps in recent weeks aimed at addressing elevated gas prices, caused by the war in Iran. According to AAA, the average price of a gallon of gasoline in the United States is above $4.34, with a gallon of diesel costing nearly $6.28.
Most recently, the president announced a deal with Russia to release Russian diesel fuel to American and global markets, though the agreement has been met with criticism from Democrats, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and even some Republicans.
Trump amended his rhetoric on the deal slightly Tuesday morning before departing the White House, telling reporters that the Russian diesel is “being released into the world,” not “released to us.”
The bulk of the vice president’s remarks were focused on attacking James Talarico, the Democratic nominee running against Paxton for Texas’s open Senate seat. The RealClear Politics polling average showed Talarico leading Paxton by 2.7 points on Tuesday.
TRUMP SAYS HOUTHIS ARE ‘PURPOSEFULLY TRYING TO DRIVE UP OIL PRICES’ TO HELP IRAN
“You are a radical. You are a wolf in sheep’s clothing. So, while we may laugh at James Talarico for all the goofy stuff that he says, the simple fact is he is dead serious. He is crazy, and we cannot elect ‘Talafreako’ to the United States Senate,” Vance told the crowd, echoing Trump’s nickname for Paxton’s opponent.
