Convicted murderer Christa Pike appears to be recovering faster than expected after surviving an execution attempt just over one week ago.
According to her lawyers, Pike is now “up and walking,” albeit with assistance.
She’s also started to eat a regular diet and regain her strength.
Fox News Digital reporter Michael Ruiz shared a statement from Pike’s legal team on her condition:

UPDATE ON CHRISTA PIKE’S CONDITION
Statement from Randy Spivey and Kelly Gleason from the TN Office of the Post Conviction Defender, and Stephen Ferrell and Luke Ihnen from Federal Defender Services of Eastern Tennessee, attorneys for Christa Pike
The turnaround in Christa Pike’s health in the last three days has been profound and a credit to the medical team caring for her. She woke up from unconsciousness Tuesday morning (Oct. 6) and began taking limited steps Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 7). Today, she is walking with some assistance, and her arms—which sustained significant injuries during the execution attempt—are healing and regaining movement and strength. Her lungs are clear, and she has started to eat a regular diet. Physicians are encouraged by her physical recovery.
While her physical recovery has been remarkable, significant questions remain about the long-term effects of what she endured. Christa is dealing with the profound psychological trauma of having survived a failed execution, including the terror, pain and uncertainty of believing she was about to die. We cannot yet know the full emotional and psychological toll of that experience or how long it will take her to begin to heal. Even as she struggles to process what has happened, she continues to express concern for others, particularly the family of her victim Colleen Slemmer.
Christa also continues to experience cognitive challenges with concentration and memory. Her physicians have cautioned that it may take months to fully understand whether she sustained lasting cognitive injuries.
Christa committed her crime at just 18 years old after a childhood marked by rape, sexual violence, physical abuse and neglect. Later into her incarceration, Christa was finally properly diagnosed and treated for bipolar disorder and PTSD caused by her upbringing.
Christa has endured more than enough. We continue to call on Gov. Lee to commute her death sentence to life in prison without the possibility of parole. She should never be subjected to another execution attempt.
Along with making physical strides, Pike is clearly not brain-dead.
Her attorneys say she has some mental fog but was able to answer basic questions upon waking up from her unconscious state.
One of her lawyers, Stephen Ferrell, spoke exclusively with
BBC:
As of late on Wednesday, though, Pike was “fairly well”, Ferrell said.
“What’s been described to me is that physically there’s quite a bit going on, that her arms are very injured and she’s not able to use them very much.”
Of her physical movements, Ferrell added: “She is up and walking for the first time today, but just around the room, not very far.”
Turning to her mental state, he said: “I think it’s kind of good and bad. Good that she is fairly with it, but she’s also somewhat foggy. She can lose her train of thought really easily and forgets where she’s going.”
Ferrell said much remained unknown about what happens next. “I assume [the situation for Pike] will keep improving, but there could be some permanent damage. We don’t know that yet.”
He added that the team wanted Pike to receive psychological support, since that “clearly is necessary now”.
After two doses of the lethal injection drug pentobarbital failed to kill her, Pike remained in critical condition for days on a ventilator. It wasn’t immediately clear whether she would ever wake up again.
Now that she has and appears on track for recovery, Pike’s whole case is in uncharted territory. It’s unclear what her future will look like.
Her legal team is pushing for her sentence to be commuted to life in prison, rather than having her face a second execution attempt.
Previously, they said that she is “angry and confused” about the situation and is suffering from several ailments, including pneumonia and a blood clot in her arm.
Per
AP News:
Pike’s legal team said she still can’t move her arms or swallow and has some cognitive confusion. She also has pneumonia and a blood clot in her arm, Spivey said. Her hands were extremely swollen when they saw her Tuesday in the hospital, shackled to a bed, he added.
Her prognosis remains unclear and she has a long road to recovery, he said.
“She is angry and confused about everything right now,” Randy Spivey said during a news conference following a court hearing about preserving evidence.
Spivey, who was not with Pike when she woke up, was told her first words were, “Where am I?” and “Who are you?”
The New York Post provided additional coverage in this clip:
Christa Pike is “up and walking” in the hospital after she cheated death and survived her botched execution last week — which she is “very aware” of, according to her legal team. Watch here:
