Future University of Texas Longhorns can no longer enroll in three majors previously offered by the university, with a spokesperson saying the majors “are changing.”
“In recognition of the changing degree offerings in the Department of Social and Cultural Analysis, the University is no longer enrolling new students in three majors: Mexican American and Latina/o Studies, African and African Diaspora Studies, and Women’s & Gender Studies,” a university spokesman told Fox News Digital.
“So, as you might expect, those majors have been removed from the University’s admissions applications to avoid new students enrolling in majors that are changing,” the statement continues. “Students currently enrolled in those majors will be able to complete their degree.”
Reporting from Inside Higher Ed indicates that a fourth major, Race, Indigeneity and Migration, will also be axed from the university.
Faculty members within the majors are becoming part of a newly consolidated department and were given no prior warning, according to the article.
In an email shared with Inside Higher Ed, Danielle Clealand, the interim chairwoman of the Social and Cultural Department, told faculty members on Tuesday that the provost’s office “rejected our proposal to keep our majors.”

Dan Brinks, the interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts, suggested the department instead create an “ethnic studies major with tracks or a SCA major with tracks,” Clealand told faculty members in the email.
The Washington Examiner reached out to the university for comment.
