Fox News shared further:
Republican lawmakers had for months expected Jordan to launch a bid for House minority leader should they lose the House majority in this year’s elections. He’s quietly been building up support and goodwill within the House GOP and spent much of the midterm season campaigning for various Republican candidates across the country.
Whoever wins House minority leader is all but guaranteed to take on the role of Trump’s top defender against a barrage of Democrat-led investigations and potentially even impeachment efforts.
Jordan has spent the last six years as top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, where he’s gone toe-to-toe with the very Democrats who will likely be at the forefront of the Trump accountability push.
Jordan previously ran for House speaker in October 2023 after a GOP rebellion deposed former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., but failed to clinch the necessary chamber-wide majority. Moderate Republicans who opposed that campaign accused Jordan’s allies of fomenting an aggressive public pressure campaign that even escalated to death threats in some instances.
House Majority Leader Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) will also seek the position.
“His number one goal will be to lead the conference back into the majority. He is a proven and tested leader who is ready on day one. He’s spent his career unifying Republicans and he is prepared for the big legislative and oversight battles ahead. The conference knows him, how he fights, and that he’s a trusted leader,” a source told
Fox News about Scalise’s decision.

NPR has more:
Jeffries was elected House minority leader in 2022 and is the first Black politician to lead either party in the House or Senate. As speaker, Jeffries would be second in the presidential line of succession, after the vice president.
His elevation to speaker would represent the pinnacle of a nearly 14-year House tenure, a span that has seen Jeffries rise from a rank-and-file member focused on criminal justice policy to a top party lieutenant under former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and then minority leader.
It’s a rise that has meant securing buy-in from a diverse and often fractious House Democratic caucus — a task that may prove only more challenging as the Democratic Party now looks to make good on its promises to voters.
“This is a change election, and we understand as House Democrats that we need to deliver dramatic change,” Jeffries said on Tuesday night. “Things are broken. We need a Congress that puts the American people first.”
