Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis had an ominous message for Republicans after Democrats captured the majorities in both the Senate and House of Representatives.
DeSantis called the results the political equivalent of a “meteor strike.”
“And the one state that was able to hold the line and withstand that is right here in the Free State of Florida,” DeSantis commented.

The Florida governor also warned that Republicans may be unable to regain unified control of Washington, D.C. for years, stretching beyond the 2028 election.
“You are not, as Republicans, going to be able to retake the Senate under this current map just two years from now,” DeSantis said.
“And with all the House seats that have been done, probably not viable to take that back as well,” he continued.
“So this is really going to have an impact two years, four years, six years, maybe even longer before Republicans could exercise unified control in Washington again like we’ve enjoyed over the last two years,” he added.

“This is close to an extinction-level event for Republicans in many parts of the country,” DeSantis told reporters.
More from the
Associated Press:
He said his state demonstrated how the GOP can win in a tough political environment.
“People can look at Florida and show how you can deliver big results and how you can build a durable coalition,” he said.
The state avoided the brunt of Democratic victories, electing Republicans to the governor’s office and U.S. Senate.
DeSantis, a former congressman, added: “You’re going to see a lot more conflict between the Congress and the executive.”
He said the chances of a Democratic Congress approving Trump’s nominations to the Supreme Court or Cabinet agencies were “zero.”
“Dems will get 55 Senate seats and 250+ House seats. Looking at the Senate map and considering such a massive House margin, it is very unlikely Republicans will recapture the Congress in 2028. Might not have a shot at Senate control until 2032,” DeSantis said.

DeSantis also credited Florida’s Amendment 3, which provides property tax relief for homeowners, for thwarting potential Democratic gains in the Sunshine State.
“The existence of Amendment 3 on the ballot is one of the reasons Florida averted the fate of other red states. It drew more voters to the polls,” DeSantis said.

Florida Politics explained further:
Though Democrats made gains in legislative delegations on the state and federal levels, Republicans swept statewide races. And Amendment 3, which will raise the homestead exemption, passed.
“Had Amendment 3 not been on the ballot, I don’t know that we turn out the voters that we ended up turning out. People wanted to vote ‘yes’ on that, and then many of them ended up voting Republican later on down the ballot,” DeSantis recounted.
DeSantis contrasted Florida’s success with other states, such as Texas, where Democrats won statewide for the first time since 1994.
He also said “federal losses” were worse than he could have forecast, with Democrats taking control of the Senate and House and winning in GOP strongholds such as South Carolina and potentially Mississippi. The impacts will last for many cycles to come, he added.
