President Donald Trump’s war against the media came back to bite him Monday while departing the White House for the United Nations General Assembly.
Before leaving Washington, Trump held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new White House helipad. However, Trump’s remarks on the White House’s feed of the event were completely drowned out by the nearby, idling Marine One helicopter.
Trump was unable to be heard throughout the entire event, which lasted about five minutes.
A Newsmax anchor noted during the event that Trump’s ongoing war against “fake news” was “backfiring just a little bit.”
The president thanked the construction company that built the helipad and Lockheed Martin, who funded the project, shortly after the event, as a possible response to the inaudible feed.
“We are just leaving the White House Lawn on the maiden voyage from the newly built, and very beautiful, Heliport,” he wrote on Truth Social. “I want to thank Jim Taiclet, CEO of Lockheed Martin, who made this valuable contribution to our Country. Our Government has been thinking about doing this for 25 years, but was never able to get it done. I get things done! Also, and most importantly, THANK YOU to the Great Construction Workers and Stone Masons of the Washington, D.C., area, who created something very special, and to Clark Construction for its wonderful supervisory work. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”
The president announced a full ban last week, barring journalists from CNN, MS Now, and Politico from the White House grounds. The parties in question filed a lawsuit against the administration alleging violations of due process and the First Amendment.
The television pool, comprised of CNN, ABC, CBS, Fox News, and NBC News, additionally announced on Monday that they would refrain from covering his events until the ban is lifted, leaving the White House without the audio more sophisticated audio equipment used by the broadcast teams to capture the president’s comments near Marine One.
