A far-left Democrat who is heavily favored to join Congress just wound up in NYPD custody outside the United Nations.
Darializa Avila Chevalier, the Democratic nominee for New York’s deep-blue 13th Congressional District, was arrested Thursday after joining a protest that blocked traffic near the U.N. headquarters in Manhattan.
The Mamdani-backed candidate was charged with disorderly conduct, according to the NYPD.
Avila Chevalier was not alone. New York City Council members Chi Ossé and Alexa Avilés were also among the politicians taken into custody as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the United Nations General Assembly.

Avila Chevalier defeated longtime Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the Democratic primary earlier this year after receiving backing from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the city’s democratic-socialist movement.
Her district includes parts of Harlem and the Bronx. In a district this heavily Democratic, winning the primary made her the overwhelming favorite in November.
That means Thursday’s arrest involved someone who could soon be voting on America’s foreign policy, federal spending and support for Israel from the floor of the U.S. House.
City & State New York reports that roughly 250 people joined the demonstration at First Avenue and 39th Street, which was organized by Jewish Voice for Peace. Protesters sat in the roadway as about 100 NYPD officers surrounded the area.
Police moved in about an hour later and arrested roughly 80 people who remained in the street. The arrests were made without incident, according to the report.
The crowd included more than a dozen elected officials and candidates. In addition to Avila Chevalier, Ossé and Avilés, the outlet identified congressional nominee Brad Lander, state Sen. Jabari Brisport and several other New York politicians at the demonstration.
The report says Avila Chevalier issued a statement after her arrest defending the protest and condemning Netanyahu’s appearance in New York. It also notes that she has made opposition to Israel a central part of her politics and that she is virtually guaranteed to win her heavily Democratic district in November.

The protest was staged against Netanyahu’s visit and against continued U.S. support for Israel.
After her arrest, Avila Chevalier defended the disruption and accused Netanyahu of war crimes. She said she would not stand by while he appeared in New York and addressed the U.N.
Audacy carried Bloomberg’s report confirming that the NYPD charged Avila Chevalier with disorderly conduct. The report says the candidate was arrested alongside local lawmakers as demonstrators gathered in Midtown Manhattan during Netanyahu’s General Assembly address.
It also places the arrest inside the wider political fight between Netanyahu and Mamdani. Netanyahu criticized the mayor during his speech after Mamdani repeatedly called for the Israeli leader’s arrest, while Avila Chevalier declared after her arrest that Netanyahu belonged at The Hague instead of at the U.N.
Bloomberg’s report identifies her as a Mamdani ally who defeated Espaillat in June for a district covering parts of Harlem and the Bronx. That background makes the arrest more than a celebrity protest story: it involves the likely next member of Congress from one of New York’s safest Democratic seats.
The larger arrest scene showed this was a coordinated act of civil disobedience, not an accidental encounter with police:

For Avila Chevalier’s political base, getting arrested at an anti-Netanyahu protest may be treated less like a liability and more like a credential.
For the rest of the country, it is another preview of the faction now pushing to expand the Squad’s influence in Washington.
She has not even reached Congress yet, and the political theater is already underway.
