A member of the far-left “Squad” wants Congress to dismantle the Department of Homeland Security, abolish ICE and wipe out Customs and Border Protection.
President Trump’s new Homeland Security secretary just gave her a blunt answer: It is not happening.
Secretary Markwayne Mullin fired back after Rep. Delia Ramirez, D-Ill., introduced the Reimagining Safety Act, a plan that would tear down the federal department created after 9/11 and replace it with a new “Department of Community Safety.”
Ramirez laid out the full scope of her proposal in her own announcement:
The text goes far beyond a symbolic resolution or another empty “abolish ICE” slogan.
The legislation is designed to strip DHS of its current authority, eliminate both ICE and CBP, redirect their funding and begin building a separate civil immigration system.
Ramirez’s own office makes that unmistakable.
The official announcement from Rep. Delia Ramirez says the bill would preserve FEMA, TSA, CISA, the Coast Guard and customs functions while dismantling the rest of DHS as it currently exists.
It would repeal the authorities that give the department its power, abolish the two agencies responsible for immigration enforcement and border protection, redirect federal resources into community programs and curb government surveillance.
The replacement department would be called the Department of Community Safety. Ramirez’s office says it would be “human- and community-centered,” promote what the bill’s supporters call collective safety and take over the functions they want removed from DHS.
The proposal would also begin creating a separate civil immigration system. Its reach extends from the agencies at the border to the legal structure used to enforce immigration law inside the country.
Ramirez called the proposal a “community-led roadmap” and argued that the department created after the September 11 attacks has become a source of fear rather than safety.
Her office described the measure as the first bill to dismantle DHS and said it was the first time a community had designed a Cabinet-level department. The announcement was made in Chicago alongside Illinois officials, activists and immigration groups that helped shape the plan.
That framing collided head-on with the agency’s reason for existing.
DHS answered by defending its post-9/11 mission and making clear that immigration enforcement will continue:
Mullin was even more direct.
He told Fox News Digital that radical leftists are calling to defund law enforcement and abolish DHS, then declared: “It’s NEVER going to happen.”
He praised the department’s 270,000 employees for keeping Americans safe and accused Ramirez of putting illegal aliens ahead of American citizens.
A DHS spokesperson also warned that rhetoric vilifying immigration officers comes while assaults against them are rising sharply.
The Fox News Digital report says DHS pointed to violent offenders arrested in Ramirez’s home state of Illinois, including foreign nationals convicted of rape, sexual assault, robbery and homicide.
The department’s argument is straightforward: those arrests are not abstractions. They are the work performed by the same officers and agencies Ramirez’s bill would eliminate.
Among the cases DHS cited were Bulgarian national Rumen Georgriev, whom the department said was convicted of rape with a weapon; Somali national Abdukadir Haji, convicted of sex assault and rape; and Cuban national Samuel Reyes-Silva, convicted of robbery and homicide.
The DHS spokesperson said Ramirez should be thanking officers for removing dangerous criminals from her district instead of vilifying them. The spokesperson also blamed hostile political rhetoric for what the department described as a more than 1,300% increase in assaults against its personnel.
Fox also obtained Ramirez’s answer to the Trump administration. She accused Mullin and DHS of spreading fear, insisted the department must be held accountable and said dismantling it was necessary to stop what she called corruption and lawlessness.
Her allies continued pushing that message Friday with a new video accusing ICE of operating without control:
The proposal faces a Republican-controlled Congress and a president who made border enforcement central to his return to the White House.
Its immediate chances of becoming law are close to zero.
But the bill still matters because it puts a real legislative blueprint behind the radical wing’s rhetoric.
For years, Democrats insisted that “abolish ICE” did not represent the party as a whole. Now a sitting House Democrat has introduced a plan that goes further—abolishing ICE, abolishing CBP and breaking apart the Cabinet department charged with protecting the homeland.
That gives voters a clean choice.
President Trump is rebuilding immigration enforcement and restoring consequences at the border. Ramirez and her progressive allies want to dismantle the system enforcing those laws.
Mullin’s response did not leave much room for confusion.
The Trump administration intends to back its officers, keep enforcing federal law and reject the left’s attempt to erase America’s immigration agencies.
