Nidal Hasan
President Donald Trump has approved Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s recommendation that a convicted jihadist who killed U.S. troops be executed by military firing squad.
The case involves convicted Fort Hood mass killer Nidal Hasan, 56, who slaughtered 13 people and injured another 32 at an Army base in Killeen, Texas, at a time when he was an Army major.
He would be the first person executed after a U.S. armed forces court-martial since 1961, when John Bennett, an Army private, has executed in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, for raping and trying to kill a girl in Austria.
A report at CNBC said Hasan, a psychiatrist, was convicted and given the death penalty at a 2013 court-martial.
It was triggered his lethal attacks on military members at the Army base on Nov. 5, 2009.
He told the judge during the court-martial he was inspired to kill by the “leadership of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, the Taliban.”
Hegseth confirmed in 2025 he had asked the president to approve carrying out the sentence, an approval requirement under the law.
“Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has recommended — and President Donald J. Trump has approved — death by U.S. Army firing squad for convicted terrorist Nidal Malik Hasan, the jihadist who opened fire on unarmed American soldiers at Fort Hood in 2009,” Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a post on X on Monday.
“He killed 13 people and wounded 32 others while shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ during the attack,” Parnell said.
He said the secretary of the Army will confirm the “time and place.”
The execution became possible last year after the Supreme Court rejected a petition by Hasan to hear an appeal of his conviction.
Hegseth said, earlier, “This savage terrorist deserves the harshest lawful punishment for his 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood. The victims and survivors deserve justice without delays.”
A commentary at the Gateway Pundit noted, “Remember when Barack Obama said the murder of 13 people at Fort Hood in 2009 by Islamic terrorist Nidal Hasan was merely ‘workplace violence’? Well, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth recommended the jihadist killer be executed by the US Army firing squad – and President Trump approved.”
