Washington Examiner columnist Joe Concha blasted Democratic California gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra’s debate performance against Republican Steve Hilton.
“Becerra had no answers whatsoever because Steve Hilton was dealing in facts,” Concha said on Fox Business’s The Evening Edit on Thursday.
“When you look at this debate, it was absolutely a Mike Tyson in the ’80s kind of knockout by Steve Hilton,” Concha said.
The candidates’ first televised debate consisted of jabs and one-liners. Hilton sarcastically thanked the CNN moderators for “bringing Xavier out of hiding,” joking about his low profile since the June election.
Concha said Hilton’s position in polling may be low since California is Democratic, but said he thinks “after this debate we’re going to see a very, very tightening race.”
Concha also called out Becerra for drinking too much water during the debate.
“Overall, I think that Xavier Becerra probably drank about half the Pacific Ocean in terms of all those cups of water because he was so nervous and hadn’t been challenged like this before,” Concha said.
Concha also said Hilton called on voters to question why they would vote Democrat in a state like California, where there are high taxes, high homelessness, and high poverty rates.
Concha said Hilton posed questions such as, “What the hell else do you have to lose?”
Becerra took this as an opportunity to call out the Republican for linking himself to President Donald Trump, saying it was offensive to Californians who are looking for change.

Concha said while Hilton remains an “underdog,” the debate showed he is up to the challenge to “really make this a horse race five weeks before Election Day.”
“The question is, will voters get the message and say, ‘We have to do something different, or else it’s going to be the same thing over and over again?’” Concha said.
