Former Democratic Sen. Kyrsten Sinema’s bodyguard and former partner was arrested again this week for violating the terms of his pretrial release after law enforcement officials pinged him at a gun shop in Phoenix, Arizona.
Officials say Matthew Ammel, Sinema’s former bodyguard with whom she had an affair, was allegedly trying to obtain a gun, had held a large knife in the gun shop, and threatened Sinema, saying he would “take her down.” Ammel, 39, was arrested Wednesday in a Cheesecake Factory parking lot.
The second arrest came about one month after Ammel was initially arrested for allegedly causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage to Sinema’s home in Arizona after breaking into the property. Officials said Ammel threw dozens of her home’s paintings into her swimming pool and broke multiple alcohol bottles and a mirror, dispersing glass throughout the property.
Ammel was initially arrested on Sept. 17, after he was released from a mental health hospital. He was then booked at the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office and charged with felony criminal damage and domestic violence. According to the Arizona Republic, he was released on an ankle monitor, with the condition that he would stay away from Sinema.
During his second arrest on Sept. 30, Ammel was booked for violating the terms of his release and given a $25,000 bond, though the prosecutors in the case are requesting the court raise his bond to $100,000, according to the outlet.
Sinema and Ammel began their affair in May 2024, when Sinema was serving in the Senate, and Ammel was married. Ammel and his wife separated in the fall of 2024.

Sinema admitted to the affair with her former bodyguard when she sought to dismiss an “alienation of affection” lawsuit filed by Ammel’s ex-wife in North Carolina. A judge in the state recently ruled that Ammel’s ex-wife could sue Sinema over the extramarital relationship.
Ammel also threatened a North Carolina judge before his Sept. 30, according to the Arizona Republic.
