Shootout at the Somali corral: Minnesota ‘gang’ violence exploding, Dem pols blame … guns!

Mugshots from one of the many fraud cases involving Minnesota’s Somali population

It’s been headline news for months already that the Minnesota Somali community is infected with fraud. Dozens of criminal cases have erupted, and dozens of convictions already have been obtained, in schemes that analysts suggest have cost taxpayers up to $9 billion dollars.

The scandal already has cost Gov. Tim Walz his plans to seek re-election.

Now a second wave is hitting the Somali community: Its gangs and their violence.

Just days ago the son of Somali parents was arrested for allegedly planning a terror strike on the Mall of America. The suspect said, “I can’t wait until I kill kuffar man.”

And police in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, said a shooting during the local high school’s homecoming celebration last week was carried out by rival Somali gangs. Another gas station shooting in Bloomington was attributed to Somali gangs.

It has gotten so bad Michele Tafoya, running as a Republican for the U.S. Senate seat from the state, is sounding the alarm.

“I hear a lot of concerns from Minnesotans on the campaign trail about crime, and no matter what form that crime takes, Minnesotans know that they feel under a level of threat that has increased lately here in Minnesota, and in the last week and just today,” she said. “We saw the arrest of an 18-year-old Somali American citizen to Somali parents arrested for a terrorist — planning a terrorist attack — at the Mall of America during a Hmong celebration.”

She continued, “He basically stated that he wanted to take out anyone who was not a Muslim. He also noted that the Mall of America is owned by people who are Jewish. And so this was his plan, and thank goodness for the FBI in Minneapolis here and local law enforcement for catching onto this plan and derailing it well in advance. This is a guy who has pledged his allegiance to ISIS. Again, he is of Somalian descent and terror is alive and well and thank God we averted this massive crisis.”

She said, “And we have had Somali-related — Somali gang-related — attacks here locally in our suburbs at a high school football game during homecoming, at a Catholic church parking lot, at a gas station, and this is all just really started to peak here in the last couple of weeks. So it’s undeniable. Our law enforcement here are calling it out as the product of Somali gang violence, and we we’ve got to identify it and we have to find a way to deal with it.”

A Somali, Naadia Mohamed, who was elected mayor of St. Louis Park, said the solution to the problem isn’t complicated: Just ignore the U.S. Constitution and ban guns.

“We can definitely talk about this issue without making it a Somali issue,” Mohamed said. “Without making it all about Somalis, and how Somali gangs, and Somali this, and Somali that. … The rhetoric that you are pushing at best is irresponsible, at worst is dangerous.”

She said, “You may be wondering, ‘Hey mayor, how can we solve for this?’ … The answer is easy, ban guns.”

According to the Daily Wire, Jama Shine, an investigator with the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, said it was time to acknowledge the “Somali gang problem.”

He said, “We do have a gang problem. We do have a Somali gang problem, and we know who these kids are. We know their parents. We know where they live. They’re very mobile, and they’re causing a lot of problems in the community.”

The Daily Wire said, “Somalis make up roughly 2% of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metro population but account for at least 13% of its gang population, based on estimates from Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher.”

Authorities say the gangs are not like the old days, where drugs and money were driving forces. Today it’s all about social media, Booker Hodges, police chief in Bloomington, confirmed.

After more than 100 shots were fired overnight on Harriet Avenue in Bloomington, Police Chief Booker Hodges addressed the shooting and recent west metro gun violence. During the news conference, he described what he sees as differences among young people involved in Somali-American gangs.
