SHOCKING: Newly-Released Bodycam Footage Captures Aftermath of 6-Year-Old Shooting Teacher

In 2023, a shocking incident occurred at Richneck Elementary School in Newsport News, Virginia when a 6-year-old student opened fire on his teacher.

The first-grader, identified only as J.T., shot his teacher, Abby Zwerner, in the chest and hand.

Thankfully, Zwerner survived despite her injuries.

For years, police bodycam footage from the aftermath of this horrific event was kept away from the public.

But now, the video has finally been released to the public, revealing what they didn’t want you to see…

In the footage, the young boy is shown repeatedly cursing at police as he is held down by the school’s reading specialist, Amy Novac, whom he also shouts expletives at.

The child remains defiant throughout the whole thing, proudly admitting to shooting his teacher and bragging about stealing the gun from his mom.

Watch for yourself (warning: lots of explicit language):

Following the shooting, the school’s former assistant principal was charged with eight counts of child neglect.

The case was ultimately dismissed by a judge, but this footage was shown during that trial.

The Virginian-Pilot provided additional context:

Court documents say the boy removed the gun from a jacket pocket during an afternoon reading class and shot a single round at Zwerner from about 10 feet away. The bullet struck the teacher’s hand and chest.

The prosecution introduced the body cam footage — nearly three minutes long — as its first exhibit in the May trial of former Richneck assistant principal Ebony Parker. Circuit Court Judge Rebecca M. Robinson admitted it into evidence.

She allowed it to be played for the jury that was considering eight felony child neglect counts against Parker tied to events before the shooting.

Before the case began the next morning, Robinson told the prosecutor and defense lawyers that she had received “several media requests” for copies of the video, also called Commonwealth’s Exhibit 1.

“Do the parties have a position to that?” Robinson asked. “As of now, it is open, but not sealed.”

The conversation lasted less than a minute.

“Judge, I would ask to seal it because a minor is depicted in the video,” Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Joshua Jenkins said.

“Your Honor, I support the Commonwealth’s position,” said one of Parker’s lawyers, Curtis Rogers.

“OK, Commonwealth 1 will be marked sealed,” Robinson said.
A couple of days later, Robinson granted a defense motion to strike the prosecution’s case, dismissing all eight charges against Parker before the defense had to make its case.

In June, the Daily Press and The Virginian-Pilot filed a motion to unseal the video, contending Robinson’s sealing order violated First Amendment case law on access to court records.

At a court hearing in July, Parker’s lawyers asked that the video remain sealed. But Jenkins, the prosecutor, said Virginia law “does not support continued sealing.” In the end, Robinson ordered the video unsealed so long as the child’s face is blurred in the footage.

The boy, now 9 or 10, is in the custody of his great-grandfather in Newport News.

The child’s mother, Deja Nicole Taylor, 29, served time in state prison for child neglect and time in federal prison in part for lying on a background-check form when she bought the gun. She was released from prison in February.

The newly-released bodycam footage is making waves on social media, with many folks stunned at the way this young child behaved after violently shooting his own teacher.

What on earth has to happen in a 6-year-old’s life for them to end up this way?

It’s incredibly disturbing.

Take a look at some of these comments:

This is so incredibly sad. Imagine what this child has seen and heard and experienced in his six years of life to have this vocabulary and this much anger. His mom should go to prison. I don’t agree with others who are saying he needs to be locked up for life too. He could be rehabilitated with parents willing to discipline and love him well. Otherwise, yes, you’re looking at a future killer. So sad.

Holy crap – now I can see why they had the bodycam sealed for three years.

Whoever is responsible for bringing up, educating, and socializing this child should be held responsible for his attempted murder and his bad attitude towards older people and authority.

The responsible adult(s) in his life should be given the prison sentence.

He should be placed in a strict, loving home in which he learns very quickly that there is zero tolerance for foul language, mouthing off authorities, and inflicting violence upon others.
