Senate Democrats BLOCK Bill to Stop Lawmakers from Trading Stocks

In an extremely telling move about where the party stands, Senate Democrats have blocked a bill that would have restricted members of Congress from stock trading.

The legislation also included a simple voter ID requirement.

Not a single Democrat voted in favor of the bill.

Bill Melugin of Fox News broke down the details:

BREAKING: Senate Democrats have just blocked a congressional stock trading ban bill that had a voter ID attachment to it requiring photo ID to vote in federal elections. The “Stop Insider Trading Act”, which passed the House with the help of 13 Democrats, just failed a procedural vote along party lines in the Senate by a vote of 53 to 47, with every Senate Democrat voting against it. It needed 60 votes to advance.

The legislation would ban members of Congress, their spouses, and their dependent children from purchasing new individual stocks, and would required photo ID to vote in federal elections.

This was a way for Republicans to get Democrats on record on voter ID before the mid term elections, something that Sen. Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said yesterday is “supported broadly by the American people.”

But Democrats accuse Republicans of tanking an otherwise popular, bipartisan topic (congressional stock trading) by attaching voter ID to it, with Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer saying “All they really want is to score political points before they head home to campaign.”

Dems also argue the stock bill didn’t go far enough, as the President was exempt and it allowed lawmakers to keep and sell their existing stocks.

This same bill, titled the “Stop Insider Trading Act,” was approved by the House of Representatives two months ago.

At that time, a handful of Democrats joined with Republicans to pass it.

However, Senate Democrats refused to pass the current bill with the voter ID attachment.

The Hill reported further:

It passed the House in July by a vote of 232-198 with the support of 13 Democrats.

“Congress’s approval rating is only 15 percent. Why do Americans have such a lack of faith in our institutions? Well, in part, because of what has happened with trading in the Congress,” Ricketts said on the Senate floor before the vote.

Ricketts has been accused by his campaign opponent, independent Dan Osborn, of profiting handsomely from his stock portfolio during his time in the Senate.

Osborne slammed Ricketts for making an estimated $10 million in market gains in April of last year, when stocks bounced back after President Trump eased off of his sweeping “Liberation Day” tariffs.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) panned Ricketts’s proposal as a “feeble” attempt at reform that would still allow lawmakers to engage in profitable transactions.

“Only Senate Republicans would dare call a bill that permits members of Congress to continue to own, sell and in some instances buy stocks a stock-trading ban. They can’t be serious. The Republican bill is a permission slip for corruption, not a stock-trading ban,” Schumer declared on the Senate floor.

The legislation would have banned lawmakers from buying new stocks in publicly traded companies and would have required them to provide advance notice of plans to sell stocks.

But the legislation would have allowed lawmakers to keep the stocks they already own and to buy private stocks.

Sen. Schumer went as far as calling voter ID a “poison pill” while criticizing the legislation:

Keep in mind that both banning Congressional stock trading and voter ID are 80/20 issues in America.

Regardless of party affiliation, the vast majority of Americans want both passed.

Grok provided some specific numbers:

Congressional stock trading ban:
Polls show strong support, typically 70–86%. A 2023 University of Maryland/PPC survey found 86% favor (88% Democrats, 87% Republicans). Recent YouGov/Economist data showed ~76% saying elected officials should not be allowed to trade stocks. Other polls (YouGov 2024, swing-state surveys) range ~71–77%.
Voter ID:
Support is consistently high at ~80–84%. Pew Research (Aug 2025) found 83% favor requiring government-issued photo ID (95% Republicans, 71% Democrats). Gallup has shown ~84%; Fox News polls ~77–83%.

So, why won’t Democrats pass these important measures?

The simple truth is they don’t work for the American people.

And, that’s something every single U.S. citizen should keep in mind at the polls this November…
