Conservative commentator Jonah Goldberg is facing fierce backlash after taking a swipe at Turning Point USA following Republicans’ midterm election losses, sparking an ugly social media feud over the legacy of the organization’s late founder, Charlie Kirk.
Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Dispatch and a CNN contributor, ignited the controversy Wednesday when he posted a sarcastic message on X questioning Turning Point USA’s success in mobilizing young voters.
The remark came just hours after Democrats captured control of Congress, delivering a major setback to Republicans despite extensive efforts by conservative organizations to energize voters.
But Goldberg’s decision to single out Turning Point USA struck a nerve among conservatives who viewed the criticism as an unnecessary attack on an organization still mourning Kirk’s assassination.
Kirk founded Turning Point USA in 2012, transforming it into one of the country’s most recognizable conservative youth organizations before his death in September 2025.
The group’s efforts to register voters, establish campus chapters and promote conservative principles made it an influential force within the Republican movement.

Goldberg’s post quickly drew criticism from conservatives who accused the longtime Trump critic of using the election results to mock Kirk’s political legacy.
Independent journalist and conservative commentator Sara Gonzales was among those who responded most forcefully.
Gonzales called Goldberg “An absolute piece of sh*t.”

Rather than backing down, Goldberg challenged his critics, questioning whether they had substantive arguments against his criticism of the organization’s election performance.
The confrontation escalated Friday when Gonzales accused him of targeting an organization whose founder had been assassinated for his political beliefs.
Goldberg fired back with an extended response, rejecting the suggestion that his original comment amounted to an attack on Kirk.

He wasn’t “just assassinated” ffs. I didn’t mention his name. And you’re pretending to be offended because you have nothing interesting or serious to say. It’s like this is the only kind of argument you people know how to make. Heck, a serious person (ie not you) could just as easily have interpreted what I said as a lament that with Kirk gone the movement has failed. But no, you need to do this demagogic bullshit and special pleading instead. It’s pathetic and childish and a sign of your utter lack of seriousness. It’s amazing how you folks argue like the lefty snowflakes you mock.
The exchange highlighted an increasingly bitter divide between establishment conservative commentators and the grassroots movement aligned with President Donald Trump.
Goldberg, once a prominent voice in conservative media, has become a frequent critic of Trump and the MAGA movement.
He previously worked as a contributor for Fox News before leaving the network in 2021 alongside fellow conservative commentator Stephen Hayes.
The two departed amid disagreements over the network’s coverage of Donald Trump and the 2020 presidential election.
Since then, Goldberg has continued criticizing the direction of the Republican Party through his work at The Dispatch and appearances on major television networks.
His latest remarks have renewed tensions with conservatives who argue that establishment figures are more interested in attacking MAGA activists than rebuilding the Republican coalition.
Critics also questioned whether it was appropriate to ridicule Turning Point USA‘s political influence so soon after the assassination of its founder.
Goldberg, however, maintained that his remarks concerned the organization’s electoral effectiveness rather than Kirk personally.
