Recalled Eggs Now Linked To Illnesses In At Least 17 States

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have since linked an ongoing salmonella outbreak that has sickened dozens of people to the recalled eggs.

Cases, however, are appearing in states far from where the eggs were distributed.

At least 26 of those who have become ill with salmonella required hospitalization, the CDC’s latest data shows. The ages of all 98 who have become ill range from younger than a year old to 81.

The state with the most cases is Texas, where the eggs were produced, while the furthest-away cases have been reported in Michigan and New York.

As of Friday, 98 cases of illness had been linked to the salmonella outbreak, though the true number of people who have fallen ill is likely much higher, according to the CDC. Like the ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreaks, some may become sick and recover on their own without requiring medical care or undergoing testing to identify the cause of their illness.

Too late. Bought them yesterday at Kroger they were still in the shelf. Used one in cornbread and one in the salted caramel peanut butter cookies. I ate 2 pieces of cornbread and 6 (yes six) cookies. I’m ok. I’ll throw the rest away.

Henley said cooking can help reduce the risk of contamination.

“If the egg product is fully cooked … to an internal temperature of 160 degrees, that will prevent any type of salmonella,” she said.

Some shoppers said the recalls serve as a reminder to stay informed while shopping and not everyone is overly concerned.

“You have to pay attention when you go shopping,” said Garnet Holder of Bala Cynwyd.

Still, others said they are temporarily avoiding some items.
