Rand Paul trolls Fauci over diary entries

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) mocked Dr. Anthony Fauci in a social media post Monday, as newly released excerpts from Fauci’s private diary continue to reignite partisan battles over the federal government’s COVID-19 response.

“What Anthony Fauci looked like every night when he wrote about how great he is in his diary,” Paul wrote on X, alongside an edited image depicting Fauci lying on a bed writing in a colorful diary.

The post comes after Paul, who chairs the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, released 1,141 pages of Fauci’s writings ahead of the former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director’s scheduled Senate testimony. Paul has used the documents as part of his long-running investigation into Fauci’s role in the government’s pandemic response and the debate over COVID-19 origins.

Paul argued the diary entries support his claims that Fauci was aware of questions surrounding the origins of COVID-19 while publicly supporting the natural-origin theory.

“Years of stonewalling, years of the Washington establishment protecting Anthony Fauci, and now his own private diary confirms what I have said all along: early on, he knew the Wuhan market was not the source of COVID,” Paul wrote on X. “And he let the country believe otherwise anyway. Tomorrow he testifies, under oath, and this time the receipts are in his own handwriting.”

Among the entries highlighted by Republicans are Fauci’s private notes about his rising public profile during the pandemic, including references to media coverage and awards, and discussions surrounding the possibility of a laboratory origin of the virus.

The documents also detail Fauci’s interactions with scientists and officials as debate over COVID-19’s origins continued.

Fauci has previously rejected accusations that he misled Congress or concealed information about the pandemic’s origins. He has maintained that U.S.-funded research did not cause COVID-19 and has defended the oversight of federal research grants.
