President Donald Trump recently made headlines for his request that American flags be lowered in honor of the late Dolly Parton, which was a move that many fans of the singer applauded from both sides of the political aisle.

In North Carolina, however, a move by Democrat Gov. Josh Stein was not as unifying.

As Breitbart reported:

North Carolina Democrat Gov. Josh Stein ordered state flags to be flown at half-mast through Sept. 10 in honor of Gloria Steinem. The leftist feminist died last Wednesday aged 92.

Later in the same article:

She is credited with coining the term “reproductive freedom” and thanked the doctor who performed her own abortion in a 2015 memoir.

Stein “placed abortion rights at the forefront of his campaign” according to WRAL-TV in 2024 and made his pro-abortion stances a central part of his political persona.

Within days of taking office in January 2025, he issued an executive order lamenting the Dobbs decision and fearmongering over federal abortion restrictions.

The governor’s post attracted widespread criticism:

You literally just declared this to avoid bringing attention back to Charlie Kirk’s anniversary. You are utter and total scum

No thanks, we’ll be keeping ours at full staff. Her work helped enable the murder of thousands of unborn children. We don’t honor baby killers.

Charlie Kirk was killed on September 10th.

You can lower the flags for whoever the hell you want…

…but in MY house, we will remember Charlie when we see those flags at half staff on Thursday.

Oh, and by the way… you are truly a shameful, pathetic human being.

WXII added these details:

“Steinem was a powerhouse journalist and advocate for freedom and equality,” Stein said. “Her work inspired so many and helped women in the United States and across the world make real strides.”

Stein said Steinem’s advocacy helped strengthen women, families and communities.

Flags are expected to remain at half-staff through sunset Thursday, Sept. 10.
