President Trump ‘Escorted Out’ Following Bomb Squad Lockdown Near UN Building in NYC

A sketchy situation unfolded on the streets around the United Nations building in NYC a short time ago, as President Trump and world leaders met.

The surrounding streets were locked down for a time following reports of a suspicious package — and some remain shut down.

The package has since been deemed ‘NOT’ suspicious, according to a recent update from the NYPD:

UPDATE: The package has been cleared and deemed to not be suspicious.

Several videos associated with the police activity near the UN purport to show President Trump’s motorcade leaving the area.

One of the videos — originally shared by a reporter for NYC-based FreedomNewsTV — has started popping up on social media, including this one re-shared by Benny Johnson which allegedly shows the resulting police response:

Journalist Nick Sortor shared that same video, but also reported in his post that President Trump had ‘safely’ left the area by motorcade:

There has yet to be any official word from the White House or President Trump on the incident.

The United Nations has also not issued any statements regarding the nearby security response.

The suspicious package was initially discovered by a bomb-detecting canine, according to this early report from an NBC News affiliate out of New York City:

Police temporarily closed off a section of Midtown East after a possibly suspicious package was found on the sidewalk just blocks away from the United Nations, according to a law enforcement source.

An NYPD canine detected something inside an unattended black suitcase just before 3 p.m. at East 43rd Street and Third Avenue — near the Chrysler Building and just two avenues from the United Nations Headquarters, where scores of world leaders were attending the General Assembly.

The department’s Emergency Services Unit was at the scene to block traffic and tape off the area. The bomb squad responded to the scene as well, a source told NBC New York.

There is currently very little additional information available concerning the incident.

An Officer with the NYPD Bomb Squad previously described the precautions being taken in advance of today’s UN General Assembly and President Trump’s scheduled address.

Explosive-detection dogs, robots, and a slew of officers were part of the pre-event setup in order to be ready for just such an event, according to the daily NYC newspaper, AMNY:

As world leaders prepare to descend on Midtown for the United Nations General Assembly, the NYPD Bomb Squad is deploying explosive-detection dogs and robotic technology to help keep dignitaries and New Yorkers alike safe.

According to the department, the NYPD Bomb Squad will be stationed near the United Nations to conduct security screenings and provide rapid response to potential threats.

“We’re staged for the duration of this event. We’ll be screening any delivery vehicles coming in. We’re responding to any sort of incidents that may happen in this area involving any sort of explosives,” NYPD Bomb Squad Commanding Officer Daniel O’Grady told amNewYork.

“We’ll be working in close cooperation while doing that with the Secret Service and the FBI, and then we’re also handling anything that happens citywide,” he added.

The Bomb Squad won’t be relying solely on its human officers. To help maintain security, the unit will also deploy explosive-detection canines and robotic technology.

The dogs will be used to screen vehicles and sweep motorcades, while robots will be deployed to inspect suspicious devices. O’Grady told amNewYork that the canines have become an increasingly important part of the unit’s operations since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

As of yet, there is still no direct confirmation from either the White House or the Trump Administration, or the United Nations concerning the security incident as of the time of this report.

The NYPD is reporting that some roads remain locked down even after the package was cleared as safe, as corroborated by this coverage that just dropped from The Telegraph:

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) confirmed a package found near the UN General Assembly (UNGA) has been determined not to be suspicious.

Police and firefighters were seen near the Chrysler Building, which is just eight minutes’ walk from the UNGA.

An area between 43rd Street between 3rd Avenue and Lexington Avenue is still closed, the NYPD said.

Thankfully, there is every indication that President Trump left the area without incident.
