Washington Examiner columnist Guy Benson said Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s unsavory history may be hurting his chances in his Senate race against “youth pastor” Democratic state Rep. James Talarico.

“Part of the reason why it’s so close is because Paxton does have a lot of baggage, and some of it is messy,” Benson said Sunday on Fox News’s The Big Weekend Show. “There is the impeachment, there is this corruption tag that is definitely sticking with him; that is what the Talarico people have been pounding away on.”

Talarico has a slim lead over Paxton at 49% to 46.5%, according to the RealClearPolitics average of polls. Benson said Paxton’s history may not improve voter turnout on his behalf.

“On the other hand, you have this James Talarico character, who, I like to say he looks and speaks like a youth pastor, but votes like [Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY)],” Benson said.

Benson said Talarico has rebranded himself prior to midterm elections, attempting to appear more centrist than he previously has.

“And ultimately, there’s a lot of paper trail on him, and video on him, saying the most insane woke stuff you possibly could back when that was in vogue,” Benson said. “He is trying to reinvent himself and seem like this sort of good governance moderate Democrat.”

“One thing that we’ll find out after election night as we get these results, regardless of who wins this race, is, will there be a gap? And, if so, how big of a gap?” Benson said. “Between Gov. Greg Abbott and his level of support, who’s more of, like, a traditional, non-scandal Texas Republican, versus Ken Paxton.”
