NEW: Ballot Measure Protecting Women’s Sports From Transgenders Passes In Deep Blue State

Voters in deep-blue Washington state delivered a major victory to supporters of women’s sports Tuesday, approving a ballot measure restricting transgender athletes from competing on girls’ school teams despite a broader Democratic wave in the midterm elections.

Washington voters approved Initiative 638 with approximately 56% support, according to election results reported by The Associated Press, establishing new eligibility requirements for students seeking to compete in female athletic competitions.

The result was particularly striking in a state that has consistently supported Democratic presidential candidates for decades and has been a stronghold for progressive policies.

While Democrats celebrated congressional victories nationwide, Washington voters backed restrictions on transgender participation in girls’ sports, demonstrating that the issue extends beyond traditional party divisions.

Under the measure, students seeking to participate in girls’ school sports must provide documentation from a health care professional verifying their biological sex.

The verification can be based on reproductive anatomy, genetic characteristics or testosterone levels.

The measure also prohibits biologically male students, including transgender girls, from competing against female students in school sports with separate male and female divisions.

Supporters argue the requirements are necessary to preserve competitive fairness and protect athletic opportunities for female students.

Opponents contend the restrictions discriminate against transgender students and impose additional documentation requirements on girls who want to participate in school athletics.

Nevertheless, Washington voters backed the proposal by a double-digit margin, delivering a significant victory for advocates who have spent years pushing for sex-based eligibility standards.

The outcome also marks a departure from Washington’s previous approach, which generally permitted transgender students to compete on teams corresponding to their gender identity.

Washington was not alone.

Arizona voters also approved Proposition 318, another ballot measure expanding restrictions on transgender participation in girls’ athletics.

The Arizona proposal passed with approximately 58% support, according to The Associated Press.

The measure requires schools and athletic organizations to designate teams according to biological sex, using the sex recorded on an athlete’s original birth certificate.

It also establishes additional restrictions governing access to bathrooms, locker rooms, showers and other private facilities associated with school athletics.

Under the new provisions, schools and athletic associations cannot authorize individuals to use designated athletic facilities that do not correspond to their biological sex as defined by the measure.

Arizona already had restrictions on transgender athletes participating in girls’ school sports. Proposition 318 expands those requirements to additional athletic organizations and addresses access to sex-separated facilities.

The measure was referred to voters by Arizona‘s Republican-controlled Legislature.

Its passage demonstrates continued support for sex-based athletic restrictions in a state where the issue has generated considerable political debate.

The results in Washington and Arizona came as Republicans suffered significant setbacks in congressional races, losing control of both the House and Senate.

Yet the success of the sports-related ballot measures showed that Democratic electoral victories did not translate into voter rejection of every policy associated with Republicans.

President Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers have repeatedly emphasized protecting women’s sports, arguing that biological differences can create competitive advantages in female athletic competitions.

Democratic politicians and transgender rights organizations have opposed many of those restrictions, maintaining that transgender students should have opportunities to participate in school sports.

The competing arguments have made athletic eligibility one of the most closely watched issues involving education, civil rights and school policy.

Washington’s result is especially notable because the state has not supported a Republican presidential nominee since Ronald Reagan’s 1984 landslide.

Despite that political history, a majority of voters supported a measure that reverses the state’s previous policy on transgender participation in girls’ athletics.

Initiative 638 is scheduled to take effect Dec. 3, although legal challenges could affect its implementation.

For supporters of sex-based athletic competition, the results provide evidence that their position can attract support even in states dominated by Democrats.

And while Tuesday’s midterms produced major Republican losses, voters in Washington and Arizona delivered decisive victories for ballot measures restricting transgender participation in girls’ sports.
