The state of Texas already considers CAIR, the Quran-promoting Council on American-Islamic Relations, a terror group.
So do several foreign nations.
Now there’s a move developing in Congress to have CAIR officially labeled as a foreign terrorist group.
A report at the Center Square said the push is coming from key congressional members.
The group has asked the Trump administration to consider designating CAIR, which promotes Islam, as a terror group.
U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, already had called for that designation.
Now U.S. Rep. Randy Fine, of Florida, is sponsoring a plan to instruct the State Department to determine whether CAIR meets the criteria for an FTO label.
“It is a foreign terrorist organization,” he said in an interview with the Center Square. “I mean, CAIR was founded as an arm of the Muslim Brotherhood. It’s the front for Hamas.”
Hamas is the terror organization that several years ago invaded Israel in an act of war and slaughtered some 1,200 civilians, kidnapping hundreds more.
U.S. Rep. Earl S. “Buddy” Carter, of Georgia, said, “It’s something that needs to happen.”
CAIR boasts of being the largest Muslim civil liberties group in the country.
Such a designation would remove the group’s federal tax exemption.
CAIR has complained of Republican criticism of the organization, claiming that represents “Islamophobia.”
“In April, Rep. Chip Roy, a Texas Republican, sponsored legislation that would direct the U.S. Treasury Department to designate CAIR and its affiliates as specially designated global terrorists. The bill has 16 cosponsors, all Republican,” the report said.
