A far-left candidate says it’s because she was convicted of stealing public funds that she’s now qualified to be mayor of a major U.S. city.
That would be Denver, which long has been run by leftists and extremists and sits in a state that is so far outside of reality that its all-Democrat state Supreme Court tried to keep President Donald Trump off the 2024 ballot, and its governor repeatedly has used the state “non-discrimination” law to attack Christians for their faith.
It is ZeroHedge that documented the wild claim from Shontel Lewis, a Democratic Socialist who now wants to be mayor of Denver.
“It sounds crazy, but this kind of scenario is absolutely the norm for Democratic Socialist candidates: Being convicted of blatant criminal embezzlement is a badge of honor, not a disqualifying mark on their record. The complete inversion of moral standards is unsettling and it reinforces the need to prevent far-left activists from entering positions of local government,” the report said.

Lewis, the report explains, “stole thousands of dollars in EBT funds while working in the state food-stamp office in 2008.”
“I actually think that experience is what actually qualifies me,” she said in an interview. “Twenty years ago I was young. I was a young mom. I was grieving. I did something really silly. And I paid my restitution. I did my time and I took care of what I needed to do.”
The reported noted investigators found seven accounts Lewis “accessed” over a period of months while working at the state food-stamp office.
“She reissued EBT cards from other people’s accounts and gave the funds to her roommate (and used some herself). She originally faced felony charges, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor theft, served 18 months of probation, and later said she paid restitution in full,” the report said.
At issue now is the restriction in the state constitution that anyone convicted of “embezzlement of public moneys, bribery, perjury, solicitation of bribery, or subornation of perjury” cannot hold “any office of trust or profit in the state.”
She already has held office on the Regional Transportation District board, after lawyering up, and now she’s on the city council.

She insists the voters can negate that constitutional provision.
“I believe my eligibility should be based on the voters, not on a series of poor decisions I made over a decade ago at a time of trauma in my life,” she said.
The report charged, “This is a typical strategy for leftists, apologizing for a crime while not truly taking accountability and blaming circumstances. Millions of people go through ‘trauma’ and hardship everyday, and they don’t steal. The fact that the thefts occurred while Lewis was working in a state office makes her continued presence in government all the more concerning. She used her trusted position to gain access more easily.”
