Canadian officials have confirmed that a “mass casualty event” occurred from an explosion and subsequent fire on Saturday in a training area of Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright in Alberta.
The base, which is located southeast of Edmonton, is one of Canada’s largest and most active military training facilities. It hosts the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre, and supports training for Canadian Army units. According to 2021 census data, roughly 1,310 soldiers are stationed there.
The Canadian Armed Forces stated that a fire ignited within the training area and spread rapidly beyond its boundaries, driven by high winds. Gusts in the region reached up to 100 km/h. Local officials from the Municipal District of Wainwright reported that the fire crossed the base fence and was managed south of the town of Wainwright. No evacuation order was issued for nearby residents.
By late Saturday night, municipal authorities indicated the fire was under control, with crews from multiple jurisdictions responding to protect people, property, and infrastructure.
“I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base,” Canadian Defense Minister David McGuinty confirmed in a statement. He described the situation as “very, very active and delicate” and added, “I cannot recall an incident like this in recent memory.”
The Canadian Armed Forces stated that its immediate priority was supporting those affected and notifying next of kin, and that it would not release specific casualty figures until that process was complete. Global News, which cited unnamed Canadian Armed Forces sources, reported at least seven deaths and dozens of injuries.
Dr. Warren Thirsk, an emergency physician at Royal Alexandra Hospital, told the outlet that the volume of patients would overwhelm local facilities and described the event as a rare large-scale disaster.
According to preliminary reports, a live-fire training round struck a natural gas line or well on the base, which ignited the explosion and fire. The base contains numerous buried natural gas wells.
Prime Minister Mark Carney stated on social media that a “serious incident creating a major fire has occurred at CFB Wainwright, in Alberta. Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected.” He added that his government is working in close coordination with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and local authorities.
