Former Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem filed for divorce from her husband Bryon Noem after 34 years of marriage.
The divorce was filed due to “irreconcilable differences,” according to documents obtained by Dakota News Now.
Kristi Noem said she was “devastated” after allegations surfaced that her husband was a secret crossdresser and chatted online with fetish models, as was first reported by The Daily Mail. In a selfie, Byron Noem was seen in a skin-colored top with fake breasts and pink shorts. In July, her mother told The Daily Mail that the former DHS secretary was planning to divorce her husband.
Kristi Noem filed the divorce paperwork on Monday, Sept. 28, in South Dakota’s Hamlin County. The split comes months after she was fired by President Donald Trump from her position at DHS.
The two were married in 1992 and had three children.
Before taking over the DHS, Kristi Noem was the first female governor of South Dakota from 2019 to 2025. After taking the position in Trump’s Cabinet, Kristi Noem faced backlash over Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers’ tactics.
Trump also expressed frustration over her $220 million ad campaign, which featured the former DHS secretary riding on a horse and rounding up buffalo and included clips of Trump and law enforcement.

“Anyone who searches for freedom can always find a home here, but that freedom’s a precious thing, and we defend it vigorously,” Kristi Noem said in the ad. “From President Trump and me, welcome home.”
Kristi Noem testified that Trump was aware of the ad, but the president publicly disputed the narrative, saying, “I didn’t know about it,” before firing Kristi Noem and replacing her with current Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin.
The Washington Examiner has reached out to Kristi Noem for comment, but has not heard back.
