Republican Rep. Victoria Spartz lost her Indiana House seat to Democrat J.D. Ford on Tuesday, handing the GOP a damaging defeat in a district it entered Election Day favored to hold.

Ford’s victory flips Indiana’s 5th Congressional District and gives Democrats a pickup in their push to seize control of the House.

The result turns a closely watched Republican defense into a warning sign for the party as competitive races unfold across the country.

Spartz entered the election with a clear advantage in forecasting models. Decision Desk HQ classified the race as likely Republican in its pre-election forecast, despite polling that suggested a much tighter contest than the district’s GOP lean might indicate.

The first returns quickly put Republicans on edge.

Ford posted a strong opening showing in Hamilton County, outperforming the initial vote share Democratic operatives had anticipated, according to The Washington Post. The early count drew national attention to a race that Republicans had been expected to survive.

There had been warning signs before polls closed.

An October survey from Quantus Insights showed Spartz leading Ford within the poll’s margin of error. Surveys commissioned by Democratic interests also suggested a competitive race, giving Democrats reason to pursue an upset.

Ford, a Democratic state senator, challenged Spartz in a district that includes suburban communities northeast of Indianapolis and stretches into east-central Indiana.

Spartz, who has served in Congress since her initial election victory, campaigned on issues including the national debt, manufacturing and energy. Ford emphasized health care, including services for children and older Americans.

The district’s potential significance extended beyond Indiana. The Wall Street Journal identified the contest as an early bellwether, describing a Ford victory as a possible indication of broader Democratic gains.

His win will force Republicans to make up ground elsewhere after losing a seat they had been favored to keep.
