JUST IN: Judge Who Signed Ilhan Omar Search Warrant Is A Deep Blue Democrat

The federal magistrate judge who reportedly approved the search warrant for Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington-area home has a long, documented record of giving to Democrats—including Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock.

That detail throws a serious wrench into the claim that the search can simply be dismissed as partisan retaliation against a Trump critic.

Federal Election Commission records list contributions from a Matthew Sharbaugh whose employer and location match the judge’s background. The filings include donations tied to Hillary for America, the Hillary Victory Fund, Biden for President and the Biden Victory Fund.

The same donor trail also includes contributions connected to Jon Ossoff, Raphael Warnock, Senate Majority PAC and other Democratic candidates and committees. The entries span multiple election cycles and identify the donor as an attorney working for Morgan Lewis, the firm where Sharbaugh practiced before joining the bench.

Those records do not prove why Judge Matthew Sharbaugh approved the warrant or how he weighed the evidence. They do make it much harder to portray him as an obvious MAGA partisan carrying out President Trump’s wishes.

Here is the political contradiction at the center of the story:

Just a reminder that the judge who signed off on the Ilhan Omar search warrant is a Democrat who was appointed by Democrats, donated to Democrats including Hillary Clinton and clerked for an Obama judge. So Obama is accusing a Democrat DC judge of political weaponization?

There is an important distinction about Sharbaugh’s position. He is a U.S. magistrate judge, not an Article III district judge nominated by a president and confirmed by the Senate.

The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia says Sharbaugh joined the bench in October 2024 after working as a partner at Morgan Lewis. His court biography says his practice focused on government investigations, white-collar litigation and enforcement matters.

Before private practice, Sharbaugh served in the Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section and prosecuted public-corruption and campaign-finance cases. He also clerked twice for Judge Robert Wilkins—first on the district court and later on the D.C. Circuit—and Wilkins was nominated to both courts by Barack Obama.

The court’s official announcement says Sharbaugh was selected after a comprehensive process involving a merit-selection panel. Chief Judge James Boasberg administered the oath, and Sharbaugh began an eight-year term as a magistrate judge rather than receiving a presidential lifetime appointment.

Former President Barack Obama nevertheless accused the Trump administration of selectively targeting Omar over her political beliefs and speech:

It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.

The underlying warrant remains sealed, so the public still cannot inspect the affidavit or the exact probable-cause showing presented to the court.

The Washington Post reports that news organizations have asked Sharbaugh to unseal the warrant. Citing people familiar with the order, the newspaper says he imposed protections tied to the Constitution’s Speech or Debate Clause before authorizing the search.

Omar’s lawyers allege that agents failed to follow judicial limits while searching her home and handling potentially protected congressional material. The Justice Department disputes that account and says its attorneys and law-enforcement partners complied with every court order and legal obligation.

The Post says agents seized documents, a phone and a passport in an investigation involving immigration records. The full scope remains unclear, no charges have been announced, and the sealed affidavit prevents the public from testing the government’s evidence for itself.

A separate report this weekend raised new questions about what investigators may have presented in seeking warrants:

My sources tell me the raid on Rep. Omar’s home earlier this week goes far beyond simple immigration fraud. Federal agents obtained DNA from Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and her family to get search warrants https://t.co/zYLggSwodm

That DNA claim is a reporter’s account based on unnamed sources, not a public court finding. Until the warrant materials are unsealed, it should be treated as an allegation rather than established fact.

Approval of a search warrant is not a finding that Omar committed a crime. It means a judge found probable cause to authorize a search of specified places or property, a lower standard than the proof required for a conviction.

That is the core irony. A jurist with a documented history of donating to Democratic candidates and committees still found sufficient legal grounds to authorize the search—while reportedly adding limits designed to protect a member of Congress’s constitutional privileges.
