Salah Sarsour, the chief of Wisconsin’s biggest Islamic mosque, can be deported by the administration of President Donald Trump, according to an immigration judge.
He won’t be sent away immediate, to give him time to appeal, but the ruling this week from Judge Jayme Salinardi comes in the case involving Sarsour, who acquired multiple convictions years ago in Israel.
Patrick Taurel, a lawyer for Sarsour, said he looks forward to winning on appeal. Sarsour’s lawyers now plan to file for “relief” from a deportation order, claiming he would be tortured if he was sent to Israel, the West Bank or Jordan.
Sarsour has been labeled by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel as a “Palestinian activist, lawful permanent resident and Milwaukee mosque leader.”
He was arrested months ago by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The report said if Sarsour wins his appeal, he would not be sent to the countries cited, but that still would not protect him from deportation somewhere else.
The judge rejected the government’s charge that Sarsour lied on federal documentation years ago by refusing to list his two convictions in Israel.
The report said the convictions were for stone-throwing and attempting to procure a weapon.
His lawyer claims those convictions involving violence were coerced by torture.
But Secretary of State Marco Rubio has charged Sarsour is deportable on foreign policy grounds.
Salinardi did affirm some claims from the government, citing claims from Rubio that Sarsour’s pro-Palestine speech harms U.S. foreign policy.
That meant that Rubio’s determination provided “presumptive and sufficient evidence” that Sarsour was deportable.
The judge also noted government documents about Sarsour’s convictions were credible, making him deportable.

A lawful resident of the U.S., he is president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee’s board of directors, a local furniture store owner and a board member of American Muslims for Palestine.
Salinardi also announced his retirement, confirming the Sarsour case is being transferred to Judge Craigt Defoe.
The Washington Examiner said Sarsour confirmed he’ll fight the ruling.
