House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) fully backed Rep. Thomas Massie’s (R-KY) expected impeachment resolution against War Secretary Pete Hegseth on Sunday.
“I’m a hard yes on the Hegseth resolution. The so-called Secretary of Defense has abused his power, undermined our national security, and engineered this reckless and costly war-of-choice in Iran, which has skyrocketed prices on the American people and made the country less safe. Pete Hegseth has got to go,” Jeffries told ABC News’s This Week.
Massie filed eight articles of impeachment against Hegseth in early September before the House adjourned ahead of a final vote. Massie has said he plans to force a vote on his resolution against Hegseth at the beginning of this week, giving the war secretary an ultimatum following the midterm elections: resign or face impeachment.
Jeffries said the Democratic caucus would discuss Massie’s articles in full once they return to the lower chamber on Tuesday.
“We’ll certainly have that conversation on Tuesday morning when we reconvene for the first time in Washington, D.C. But I believe there will be incredibly strong support for that resolution,” Jeffries told the outlet on Sunday.
Following Democrats’ sweeping wins in the 2026 midterm elections, as Democrats head into the final two years of the Trump administration with at least 254 seats in the upper chamber, the Iran war has come under increased scrutiny, with voters delivering a rebuke of the resulting high energy prices on Tuesday.
As the head of the Pentagon, with the Iran conflict under the microscope and several other controversies behind him, Hegseth has quickly become a target of Democrats as they head back to Washington with a new post-midterm fire underneath them.

Massie, who is entering his final two months as a lame duck after being replaced in the lower chamber by Trump-backed Rep.-elect Ed Gallrein, is setting his sights on Hegseth alongside Democrats.
“There is one contingency in which I won’t reintroduce the articles of impeachment: Hegseth resigns,” Massie wrote on X.
