In a stunning reversal of their earlier position, lawmakers in the United Kingdom abruptly have voted down a plan to legalize the deliberate killing of adults, through “assisted suicide.”
That’s when adults who are convinced they want to kill themselves are provided the means to do so, often through the administration of deadly drugs.
It’s a common practice in Canada, where tens of thousands have died this way.
Earlier, the U.K. parliament had adopted this very plan in the House of Commons, but the move was stalled in the House of Lords.
Now those in the House of Commons, by a narrow 286-270 margin, have rejected the plan.,
The Washington Examiner reported the vote ended the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill which would have allowed “adults who are terminally ill, subject to safeguards and protections, to request and be provided with assistance to end their own life.”
Members had, in fact, approved, a nearly identical plan in the last legislative session.
Last time it was proposed by Labour Member Kim Leadbeater; this time by Labour Member Lauren Edwards.
The report explained the difference this time was the there was significantly less “institutional backing from party leaders.”
In fact, Prime Minister Andy Burnham did not vote and did not even attend during the vote.
Previously, his predecessor, Keir Starmer, was an enthusiastic supporter.
The holes in the process, which includes a forecast for an expected life span, were cited.
“I have to be honest with you,” Zubir Ahmed, a cancer surgeon and Labour MP, told his fellow members of parliament. “When I am asked to prognosticate as to whether someone has six months to live or not, I am as often wrong as I am right.”
Already, such euthanasia programs have been set up in Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Spain, Switzerland, Canada, and elsewhere, the report said.
